Has anyone ever heard of the GreenLee 93-105 RMSA?
« on: June 17, 2016, 06:31:09 pm »
Hi, I'm looking for a multimeter and came across the GreenLee 93-105 RMSA locally, but I have not been able to find any information about it on the web. At $80 would you say that this is a worthwhile investment or should I look for something that is newer and better documented? Thanks in advance!

APPA Tech is the original manufacturer of this meter. It is an older APPA Tech meter.

http://www.appatech.com/appa_product.php?id=2005081003113623241

Greenlee, like most tool companies, don't make their own meters.  They get someone else to make them and just rebrand them under their color scheme.  Currently, the some of latest Greenlee models are Brymen ODM.

Your meter is show here below in the threads.  If memory serves, I think I paid $10 for mine.

If you are looking to buy an used meter in the $80 range, you might be able to get an original Fluke 87 with some patience.  Other options in the $80 to $100 range for USA ebay people include

PS. For the original Fluke 87 I, you get a full service manual + schematics.

Check your local craigslist, etc for local deals.  You can see the meter in person, test it to make sure the fuses aren't blown, open up the meter to make sure they are really HRC fuses, negotiate on price, etc.  You will also have less competition vs all those ebay buyers looking for bargain multimeters.

If you don't mind sharing your location, we can look at your local craigslist and offer some opinions of what might be a good buy in your area.

Some pawn shops can also offer potentially good deals.

Thank you both. I don't think I will be going with the GreenLee in that case. I've been trying to find something like a Fluke 87 locally (Folsom CA), but have not been having very good luck with my price range of under $100. It seems I may have to just keep looking or settle for something like the UNI-T UT61E as I'd prefer something with True RMS (this rules out the fluke 17b+ and such).

Your local craigslist doesn't seem to have much choice for multimeters right now.

A couple more suggestions.  Let your friends and family know you are looking for a Fluke 87.  Recently two forum members happened to get lucky and get a Fluke 87 for free from family/friends.

Put a want ad on craigslist for a Fluke 87 with price of $100.  Someone may want to sell after seeing your ad?

This Amprobe AM-59 may go uncontested for $25 + free shipping?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/401136389909

It is a Brymen (BM620S) meter just rebadged in red for Amprobe.  See

http://brymen.com/product-html/cata620/Bm620s.htm

Manual at

http://content.amprobe.com/manualsA/AM-52_AM-57_AM-59_Digital-Multimeters_Manual.pdf

The meter needs a little TLC and cleanup, but it comes with Fluke silicone modular probes (arguably $15 to $20 itself).  Fuses might be blown despite what seller says about it being "used working condition and has been tested."

It comes with decent features.  0.15% +/- 3 digits DCV accuracy, temperature, 10,000 count, uA range,  min/max/average, true RMS, 4 updates/sec, bargraph, etc.

If you can get it for $25 and give it a good TLC as per

http://mrmodemhead.com/blog/dirty-multimeter-clean-up/

I would definitely consider it a good deal and would buy it myself.  While I haven't used this exact meter, I have an older Brymen rebadged as Greenlee that is similar to this meter.  I got it for about $21 USD.

PS. This is the third time the seller is listing it.  He listed June 1 and 9 and both auctions ended with no bidders.  You might want to put in a bid for $26.05 now to prevent any last minute sniping?

Now that USA eevblog members know about this auction, you may have some competition?  :box:

Fluke silicone probes in auction are likely TL224

http://www.fluke.com/fluke/caen/accessories/Test-Leads-Probes-and-Clips/TL224.htm?PID=56739

with some variation of TP220

http://www.fluke.com/fluke/caen/accessories/Test-Leads-Probes-and-Clips/TP220.htm?PID=56790

As I mentioned, the probes alone, used, are worth likely $15 to $20.   To buy brand new, both are about $25 to $30 USD each.

Auction picture shows 1.0 ohms when seller is shorting out probes, but his dirty fingers touching both probe tips which may be affecting the reading slightly high.

BTW, I have no affiliation ebay and/or seller.  In addition, like anything on ebay, caveat emptor.  In the end, it is your decision.  When I buy used items from ebay, I only buy/bid what I think I can afford to lose if the transaction is a disaster (i.e. paypal votes/rules against me).  $25 is around my limit for multimeters.

Thank you! I'll definitely consider that meter as a nice cleaning should bring it up to snuff.

If you decide to get it and win the auction, post before and after pictures.  In addition, pictures of pcb would be appreciated so we can see how it is constructed on the inside.

If you win at $25, you still have $75 to get another meter!  :-DD

Cool.  $80 is a good price assuming the fuses are good.  The leads, however, are toast.  You can cut the probes off and use the leads with some DIY mini grabbers or something, but you should get a set of new probes.  I personally like the Fluke TL-71 (silicone leads), but others make good silicone test leads.

Some people like the ProbeMasters.  I know Dave did a review of them, but can't find the video right now?

http://probemaster.com/

PS. You can still bid $25 on the Amprobe auction just to get the Fluke silicone probes and then have another quality meter.  That would put you $5 over your initial budget, but now you would have two quality meters + 1 set of really good probes.

No problem.  I'm glad you got the meter you wanted at a good price.  And it just took a little bit of patience and bidding on auction ending Sunday night on Father's Day probably also thin out the crowd despite 11 interested parties and 22 bids overall.

As I suspected, it went uncontested, but OP did not buy.  If the buyer is an eevblog forum member, I would appreciate teardown pictures.

I am, and I'll post teardown pictures when I get it. :-)

I bid $25 exactly and won the thing.
