Is this ESD mat any good?
« on: July 12, 2017, 03:39:15 pm »
I'm looking for an ESD mat to protect my bench, and found this on eBay: link.

Is it any good?

Thanks

Edit:
This one looks better (a complete kit). What about it?

Maybe, maybe not.  See https://www.eevblog.com/forum/reviews/cheap-esd-mat-from-ebay-to-protect-my-desk/
It doesn't mention its heat resistance so the odds are its the cheap and nasty vinyl mat.    Even so its many times better than no mat at all - just don't solder anything on it without a stainless tray or sheet to protect it.   (not anodised Aluminum - the oxide layer would insulate it from the mat and could defeat the ESD protection)

This one mentions resistance to high temperature. Could it still be vinyl?

That looks like the good stuff -  "150C No defect, 200C No defect, 250C No defect, 300C Very slight, 400C Slight indent, 500C Burnt."  means it will withstand momentary contact with a soldering iron tip at 370 deg C (700 deg F) and has no problems with conducted heat or solder splashes.

Its got two studs fitted so you can use one for grounding the mat and the other for a wrist strap (not supplied).

Thanks, ordered that one. The seller is also on eBay and has their own website, prices are the same across each.

PC Valet is a good seller, I have a few of their mats including the high-temp one, very happy with all of them.

i have this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/381465289780
and it's not so heat resistant. you can see it is very soft.
the best mats are the ones used as anti-static floor in surgery rooms.
they are very hard, durable and heat resistant.
if you can, get some scraps of it.
