JBC soldering iron stand wiring.
« on: January 27, 2014, 07:17:31 am »
I recently had a PM from forum member "ST" who very kindly requested that I buzz out the wiring of my JBC soldering iron stand.
I found it easier and more therapeutic to take the stand apart and get as much detail as possible. Now that I have the information, I thought it prudent to share it with everyone whilst I was at it.

This is what I discovered. I hope it helps.

Thank you for the detailed investigation, I will now be able to test my station.

There are some details I can add:

The connector on the station side is a binder series 678, Farnell order number 1122401.
The tool connector is a hirose RPC1 Farnell order number 1077724.

I do have the pinout for the tool/heater connection, and some interesting stuff I have traced out inside the station which I will share as soon as I have cross checked it for making sense with your information.

Thanks for your help!

ST

Excellent, thank you for sharing the information on the connectors.
I did investigate the iron, which has three terminals. I found two resistances in series with a tap between them. I found about 2.5? and 0.5?, however these could be seen to change with temperature, just holding the element would influence a change. I did not investigate this too much today since I had just completed a 400Km journey and thus my head was making a funny noise.

Do you guys by chance know the ordercode or type for socket for handle? I was thinking about buying the pencil and building the station myself.
I love the smell of FR4 in the morning!

The socket (male) for the handle is Farnell 1077728, RS components also carries it under 738-9038.

As for the pinout, the cartridge has three connectors, pinout to the hirose connector as follows:
sleeve (front) - 1 hirose - 1 binder
ring (middle) - 5 hirose - 7 binder
tip (pointy end towards handle) - 2 hirose - 6 binder

The heater is between 5 and 2, these are connected to heavy cables inside the station, and each goes via a dual mosfet AC switch to either side of the power winding on the transformer. There is a third heavy cable with a dual mosfet switch connected to pin 3 on the binder, this must be the connection to the second heater on the tweezers.

sleeve (front) is a ground connection. It goes to a thin yellow cable inside the station which is clearly ground for the system (connected to ground on the 7805 and earth). This serves to earth the tip.

I do not know if the thermocouple sense is done via the same two connection as the heater, or uses earth. I see no good reason _not_ to use the earth since it is there. In any case they measure with current off to eliminate the voltage drop caused by the current.

The good news is my station works fine with the handle connected like this. I don't know if I will even spring the money for the stand, since it is so overpriced.

Thanks again for the help!

ST

Hi, very useful information!

Do you know how JBC does its sleep and tip changing poweroff? I'd like to know how they implemented it.

Thanks!

Hello All,

after some Re-Engineering and  red-glowing tips I found wiring for PA-1200 micro-tweezers (see attachemant).
I don't have an original stand I'm not shure if its right, but it works for me.
As I stumbled across this threat while doing investigation I think this is the right place to post my results and maybe help others out...

Good Luck
Stephan

Have bought dr 5600 tool without stand and need time to be able to buy it.

I did this a while back:

http://www.eevblog.com/forum/reviews/jbc-dr-sd-desoldering-iron-stand-pinout/msg798594/#msg798594

Too bad we are on separate continents, I probably won't be using that stand.
