The ones based on an SMSC chip. Basically the cheaper the better the chance it works.

Many USB-ethernet adapters are supported.. The kernel source at kernel.org contains a great many drivers.

Also see here.

http://www.linux-usb.org/usbnet/

Most of them, both old and new ones work well.

Sometimes using a newer adapter gives you an unexpected speed boost.

This person more than doubled the network speed of a Raspberry Pi by using a Trendnet gigabit USB Ethernet adapter in USB 2 mode (with a Gigabit Ethernet LAN)

https://www.jeffgeerling.com/blogs/jeff-geerling/getting-gigabit-networking

Wifi:

Ralink wifi adapters are consistently well supported on Linux.

See https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/ and

What Linux boards?

Linux distro's with large storage typically come preloaded with kernel modules for *all* chipsets
But small memory and storage limited firmware often only have the kernel modules compiled that the vendor supplies with the board.

So what exactly do you mean with "linux boards"

Well, you may be lucky. That dream catcher is based on Armbian, which is not as big as a full Ubuntu distro, but still a very wide one
Thanks to the SD storage, which is plenty full, so they do not need to be skimpy on the included drivers.

So there is a reasonably chance that Armbian already has the correct kernel module, and there is also a reasonable chance that Dreamcatcher only added some stuff that they needed when they customized the image, and they did not remove anything, so the module is still there.

Plug in the USB-ETH, and see if you get an extra interface with command ifconfig

If not, plug in the USB-ETH, and do command dmesg. Or command lsusb
and report the results back, it should hold the exact ID's for your USB-ETH, and then we can look what module it actually needs.

Hello!

I've recently bought an Ugreen Ethernet to USB 3.0 converter in Aliexpress but it's still in customs. Reviews are great.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Ugreen-USB-Ethernet-10-100-1000-Mbps-Rj45-Gigabit-Network-Card-Lan-Adapter-For-Mac-OS/32400737540.html

http://www.ugreen.com.cn/product-697-en.html
Item Code:
White:20255
Black: 20256

It's based on AX88179 chip.
http://www.asix.com.tw/products.php?op=pItemdetail&PItemID=131;71;112

Here you can find linux and windows drivers (Nov 2017) but it should work out of the box.

https://www.ugreen.com/drivers/216-en.html
https://www.ugreen.com/drivers/220-en.html

Hope this can help!
