Long 4mm Hex Drive Bits
« on: April 01, 2018, 06:55:35 am »
Does anyone know if there exists a set of 4mm hex drive bits with long necks like this quick CAD drawing I made? $5 to the first person who can find me a set. $10 if you can find a JIS bit in this format (I repair Canon DSLRs as a hobby).

I've seen 6mm drive long neck bits, but even those are rare. I love my 4mm multi bit driver (Wiha #759), and it covers most repairs, but I still need individual long neck Philips and flat head drivers to handle recessed screws.

So far this is the closest I've found: www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/390977032938

I assume you are specifically looking for compatibility with Wiha "System 4" style drivers? That's the system which is identical to the usual 1/4" (6.35mm) shanks, just smaller. They are a little uncommon outside of Wiha and random Chinese clones. The other big German manufacturers seem to prefer reversible style bits for their 4mm products. I tend to prefer sticking with the 1/4" stuff, even it is a bit larger, as the selection is much better and everything is interchangeable.

Felo series 280 or PB Swiss series 53 are their 4mm equivalents, but as I mentioned they are long-shaft, reversible types. Doubtful they'd work well with Wiha System 4 handles, but they are long and it might be worth switching systems if these bits are really important. If standard 1/4" stuff will do, look at PB Swiss "E6L" bits (95mm long typical).

Personally I would make my own from a 4mm hex key, a suitable screwdriver and silver braze.  A standard hex key can easily be cut off with an abrasive parting disk and most plastic handled screwdrivers only have the shank press fit into the handle making them relatively easy to pull apart.  Silver braze is amazingly strong and quite suitable for this application.

See if any of these will work for you.

I want to add to above.

If you are in US.
If you have Amazon account.
Order Wiha/Wera/Gedore tools from German Amazon (amazon.de).  Your American Amazon login will work.  The prices are about 10-20 USD less than what KC Tools charges, even when KC Tools has item on sale, it is still cheaper to order from German amazon.

I did actually MacGyver such a bit a while back, though just temporarily held, in order to get enough torque to loosen some ridiculously tight screws on a camera. Thanks for the suggestion for silver braze, I'll give that a look.

From your picture, that looks almost perfect for silver braze.  Clean the black oxide from the screwdriver shank where you want the silver braze to stick. Try to make the fit into the slot of the hex as tight as possible; it will help hold it together as you heat it.  Wrap a damp cloth or paper towel around the screwdriver tip to keep it from losing temper or if you are lucky enough to have a vise with copper jaws, just clamp it tip down to braze it.

Wiha makes a System 4 Drive-Loc which has longer blades than the standard System 4 IME. The blades have indents along the shaft that are engaged by a retention ball in the handle, which allows you to set the depth as you see fit. They are longer than the standard 4mm blades.

System 4 ESD Safe Drive-Loc 12 Piece Set

For long JIS drivers, I'd actually recommend going with a Moody 58-0405 Extended Length 4 piece set (2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, and 4mm set for under $20). They're made in the US if COO matters to you. Well made IME (I have this set and the business ends are still in excellent condition; no twisting of the business ends, ... as I've experienced with other 4mm bit sets).

Here is one physical example of exactly what I'm looking for (though only torx), unfortunately it seems to be a one-off that was given away as a sample to my co worker. There's no such screwdriver kit on their website that I can find.

6" Phillips #2 Power Bit https://www.harryepstein.com/index.php/6-phillips-2-power-bit.html
It's not a 4mm hex shaft though.  :( Long 1/4" (6.3mm) bits are much easier to find.

For the 4mm stuff, the long versions are marketed as blades rather than bits (bits are ~1" long only). Unfortunately, I've never seen them in a JIS profile/pattern. Hence the Moody recommendation above (long JIS, but the compromise is they're individual drivers).
