Looking for a faster frame rate camera
« on: October 31, 2015, 03:36:32 pm »
It's time to get a camera with a faster frame rate and also to get a new copy of Vegas.   My version only handles 800X600 which is why my videos are formatted so poorly.   I have no skills or knowledge when it comes to cameras.   If I can select auto and push record, I am golden.

Looking for something low cost.  Under $500 would be great.  120 fps seems to be the norm now.

Any camera buffs care to chime in?

Can you be more specific as to the application? The world of cameras is diverse...

Sure.  The camera would be mounted stationary and used indoors only.  No harsh vibrations or wide temperatures.   I would like to be able to capture an arc event like this.

Take a look at Casio. They have a number of digital camera models with very high speed modes, up to 1200fps! The higher the frame rate, the lower the resolution (at 1200fps you're looking at postage stamp size video, something like 220x70), but that can still be useful.

Are you planning on timestretching the footage to make slow motion video? If not then 120fps isn't worth it, youtube will only manage 60fps.

Have you seen the Sony RX100 IV ?
It is probably the best consumer high speed camera (and all around compact camera) at the moment: it shoots 1000 frames per second in FullHD!
It costs 1000$ though.

Greetings

I plan to slow it down for youtube.    I have been watching some videos at the 120 fps and it does not seem all that fast.   A few of you know I have been damaging a few hand held meters.  I would be interested in being able to see how just how the arc travels across the circuit board.  Maybe the 1000 fps is more in line.    Almost need a rental place so I can try a few out.

I think with 1000fps cameras you will need to invest in lighting as well. Not as much light will be hitting the sensor in <1ms...

You wont see much information about arcing at 1000fps, what can be useful is the opposite: an SLR with the shutter open behind many layers of dark filter, then you capture an image of the arc with many seconds of trigger window.

That Sony is fast, but not quite as fast as you said. Its spec. page says it offers:
3840x2160 (30p/25p/24p)
1920x1080 (60p/60i/50p/50i/24p)
1280x720 (30p/25p)
1824x1026 (250p/240p)
1676x566 (500p/480p/250p/240p)
1136x384 (1000p/960p/500p/480p)
800x270 (1000p/960p)

That's still quite an impressive bit rate coming out of the sensor, through the compressor, and into memory. I didn't see mention of what kind of storage it needs to keep up.

Looks like it uses DRAM as a cache: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/sony-rx100-iv/sony-rx100-ivA.HTM

Interesting, I was actually thinking there would be too much light.   When the arc happens, the flash is so intense that my camera just goes white.

Some cameras don't adjust the exposure after you start recording, and even if they do, they probably don't adjust fast enough for an arc. You'll probably need to use a manual exposure setting.

It probably won't be an issue, but if it is, too much light is a much, much easier problem to deal with than too little!!!

After watching a few videos on youtube, I think I need to hold off.  After seeing some of the 480 fps cameras on an arc, it's just too slow.   Attached is pretty good.

Where did you get those resolutions? The Sony spec page I found says:
3840x2160 (30p/25p/24p)
1920x1080 (60p/60i/50p/50i/24p)
1280x720 (30p/25p)
1824x1026 (250p/240p)
1676x566 (500p/480p/250p/240p)
1136x384 (1000p/960p/500p/480p)

Yep I'm quite sure it's the one you've described, maybe ez24 got it from this quite confusing site: http://www.4kshooters.net/2015/06/12/sony-rx10-ii-and-rx100-iv-shoot-4k-xavc-s-and-1000fps-super-slow-motion/
