Rubber eye guards on adjustable focus eyepieces?
« on: November 28, 2018, 06:04:24 pm »
I've been looking at the Amscope SM-745NTP microscope head and see that it comes with two individually focus-able 10x/20 30mm eyepieces, but no eye guards.  The older model SM-745TP had 10x/20 30mm fixed-focus eyepieces that had focus-able eyepiece tube ports, and these eyepieces are supplied with rubber eyeguards. So, two different methods to individually adjust focus for each eye.

Originally, I thought Amscope just skimped on the cost and made the eyeguards an extra cost item on the SM-745NTP. But then I looked closely at them, and I suspect it has more to do with the rubber slip-on eyeguards possibly interfering with the in-and-out movement of the top lens. So, I asked Amscope if the use of adjustable focus eyepieces on the SM-745NTP will accept the accessory rubber eyeguards they sell, or is there some technical reason that precludes the use of rubber eyeguards on these eyepieces (like interference with movement). Their answer: they don't know.  :-//.  They then suggested I buy a pair from them, try it, and find out.   :-\

So, I was wondering if fellow inquiring minds here on eevblog have ever run across this.  Maybe someone on here is using rubber eyeguards on the same type or similar eyepieces as the SM-745NTP, and can tell me if they work without issue.  I would figure this out for myself if I actually owned a SM-745NTP microscope head, and barring anyone here providing some guidance, that may be the only way I figure this out.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

If you are ordering directly from Amscope and the substitution is compatible, is there any chance you could get Amscope to substitute their 10/22 eyepieces and credit you the cost of the standard 10/20 ones?

The 10/22 eyepieces look like they will accept eye guards, and I think you will not be unhappy with the greater field of view.

Well, I tried to see if they would arrange a substitution after I read your reply jfiresto, they said a sales manager would get back to me shirtly. They never did.  :--

Amscope had a CyberMonday sale of 10% off everything they sell (and 20% off all cameras and USB scopes) that ended yesterday. Not wanting to miss out on that, I went ahead and ordered a SM-4NTP scope last night, which saved me $50.

I also browsed around eBay and Aliexpress last night as well, and found many vendors that offer rubber eyeguards with smaller diameter (and more shallow) mounting cups than those sold by Amscope.  Based on what I saw, I'm pretty optimistic that I'll be able to find some eyeguards that will work, once I have the scope and the adjustable diopter eyepieces in front of me to measure and assess.

Just an FYI to anyone also seeking a decent set of aftermarket rubber eye guards that fit the adjustable diopter 10x/20 30mm WF eyepieces shipping with the Amscope SM-745NTP microscope head.  I ordered these reasonably priced eye guards and found that they fit very well. You'll need to remove the rubber rings that ship with the 10x/20 eyepieces, then slip these on in their place. Don't push them down so far that they significantly obscure the diopter markings or adjustment mechanism.

They work well for me in blocking intruding light from entering the eyepieces.
