Tenma Soldering Station : Is it good?
« on: July 12, 2015, 12:37:05 am »
I am planning to buy a new soldering station and recently have come across this particular model : Tenma AT907-938D.
Datasheet - http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/1676798.pdf
By the way, I am student from India and was looking for something economical and at the same time dependable.
Are there any other models which would be worth buying and also aren't too expensive  ?

Hakko FX-888/FX-888D and Weller WES51/WESD51 are the usual recommendations for entry level soldering stations, but they are significantly more expensive

I have no experience with Tenma so can't offer any opinion. They seem to offer similar products as Atten, Aoyue, etc, but they're being sold by Farnell/Element14, hopefully someone can comment on the build quality

The Tenma AT907-938D seems to be a rebranded (as Tenma is basically made of rebranded items) Atten 938D.
So check on the net for reviews of the Atten unit (Dave made also a review/teardown)

If you want that style of iron for cheap get a 936 clone instead, it uses more standard parts than the 938.

If you just add ATTEN  to that model number you come up with the original unit
http://www.batronix.com/shop/soldering/Atten-AT938D.html

As said, you can check a lot  of reviews on it to see if it is worth the money.

My choice would be a cheap 936 clone which works well for me or if you are doing a lot of soldering and want a much better quality then you have to start looking at Hakko Fx 888d type units, but only buy the Hakko from an authorised  dealer as there are too many clones out there,

Maplin also offer this under their Precision Gold brand, frequently on promotion at £39.99, seems a decent iron.

It's just another Chinese clone of a Hakko 936 with a fancy display, don't get fooled into thinking these will give any better performance than any other of the other half dozen or so Chinese clone brands and their rebadged versions.
