Tayda review (First package)
« on: November 07, 2013, 08:44:37 am »
Well had placed an order with Tayda on 11/1 late at night and received it on 11/6. Pretty darn good I'd say.

Some people said that Tayda was based in Thailand but this package has a return address of
Airbiz2555
510 Ridgeview Dr.
Louisville, Colorado 80027

I put it into google maps and found this
https://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF-8&layer=c&z=17&iwloc=A&sll=39.963484,-105.157944&cbp=13,14.5,0,0,0&cbll=39.963270,-105.158017&q=510+ridgeview+dr+louisville+co+80027&ei=lk57Urb9OMXJkAfOhIH4Cg&ved=0CCsQxB0wAA

It looks like a residential neighborhood that's under construction. Hmm. My name, address and country were stamped on the outside of the envelope but there was a separate US Postal Service shipping label underneath. I suspect they may be using a remailing service.

In short, each item is bagged by part. All chips are on pink foam and the entire thing was shipped in a zip-lock style bag inside a pink bubble wrap package.

The protoboard I ordered was sealed inside an air tight package I guess to reduce any oxidation.

One thing's for sure, the time it would take to individually bag these parts would certainly be worth more than $25 of my time.

I'm uploading a few pictures of the contents and will post them shortly.

Tayda are good for stocking up on simple things, watch their facebook page as once a month or more they have a 15% off discount code.

Was this just a parts purchase or did you get some of the whimsical kits they sell.

I did some looking on ebay today and realized I had purchased some 16MHz ceramic oscillators from them before and I remember them coming from Thailand but shipped from Louisville, Co. I recognized the labels on the bags.

So this is what I found.
There is a Tayda2009 ebay account and TaydaElectronics account. There was also one more but I forget what it was. One ships from the US, one ships from Thailand and one ships from Singapore.

This was a stock-up session. About $25 after shipping and discount. I got 10 each of all the metal film resistors, 10 each of all ceramics and 2 each of the electros (I removed any ones with the same uF rating that were different voltage. If the price was the same I kept the higher voltage) All the electros were 16V or higher which is all I need for my basic stuff.

I'll see if I can find my invoice. I thought at first there were missing parts but I went through and it was all there.  Apparently there were things I thought I had added that I didn't (diodes and trimmer pots)

I looked at about 5 of the 74 series chips and all seemed to be TI .

Wow! It would easily have cost $25 just going through that list and pick the parts, let alone the actual compnent and shipping costs!

Yeah I was wondering how I was going to sort all this stuff, but with the bags I think I'm going to just separate by base values.

I'll make a bin for 1's which will have 1, 10, 100, 1K, 10K etc and one for 2.2s, 3.3s, 4.7s etc

But I really am wondering how all this works, because I got a US Mail tracking number the following day, but then had 2 or 3 days with no updates, then magically it was in Colorado.  The labeling of my address on the package above the postage sticker makes me think they have daily bulk boxes they ship to the US to be separated.

I paid about $4.60 shipping but the package itself said it was $2.90.  Maybe they send it in bulk and mark the package something like "donated blankets for poor people" hoping it will slip through customs without being opened. Then it arrives at the remailing location to be shipped locally.

That's just a guess. I don't really know how they operate as their website does not give any indication of location. I only know from what I've heard from others and what I've seen on Ebay.

They say they offer a commission service if you submit a project to them and people buy the kit through Tayda.

Sounds like it's a bulk air container shipped from Tayda to AirBiz in CO. AirBiz then separates everything and labels it for shipping via USPS (labels already generated, hence the tracking number but no update until it hit USPS in CO).

Might be this company, based out of South Africa (claim to operate in 500 cities), and it seems to be the type of services they offer (international freight couriers).

Tayda is awesome. I ordered a large number of parts to fix my Array Power Supply from them. Frankly their prices on TIP35C and TIP36C were unbeatable at that time (thats not including the extra 15% off). To even get close on Digikey or Mouser you were looking at needing to order qty of 2000+ in order to get similar pricing. In general, before the discount I was already looking at 50+% savings compared to Digikey and Mouser.

Also, at the time I worried about knock-off parts due to the cheap prices. So I decided to etch one of the TIP35C transitors (which I accidentally killed by my bad soldering ability):
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/nitric-acid-and-a-hotplate/

Sure enough the transistor die was the right size of a power transistor and some of the internal details under the epoxy (things like the location of lines in the middle leg) match to what little I could see of the genuine before I ran out of nitric acid.

Just like your mine shipped from Colorado. I agree they must be bulk shipping to CO and then USPSing it everywhere. Likely saves them a ton in shipping costs and more importantly shipping time.

I didn't even know of this place - thanks for sharing!

Does anyone know if they SMD stuff(passives and components)  come on a reel?  Or bagged?

Just send them a email and ask for the packaging you need and they usually will be able to deliver what you need.

I find that interesting because I have a couple of TO-3 2N3055 metal transistors I got for the purpose of opening them up and using them as Gamma detectors. I never thought about trying to open a TO-220 for the same purpose.

Compared to the metal case I can't imagine that the epoxy used in to-220 devices has a very high gamma cross-section. I might be entirely wrong but you may not even need to decapsulate.

I must say, having a 99.8% positive eBay feedback score for 111,000 transactions is quite impressive. I ordered from them recently and am quite happy. I was expecting a 2-4 week wait for delivery, only to receive my order within days.

Whatever they're doing, they're doing it right. Two thumbs up! :)
