Was interested how they are build and now found an application for my USB microscope.
Maybe images are of interest to someone else too.
It seems to be dead already and dit not respond to any (primitive/Grid Dipper style) RF stimulus 1..50MHz.
Other than the early versions they now seem to contain some RFID style elctronics.

Some tags meant for retail are permanently killed by the deactivation station at the cashier. Others are reusable, for things like library books that should be reactivated. The principle is RF backscatter, which can now be used by active devices to transmit data, in some cases over quite long distances (multiple km!)

Some retail tags are rewritable, so you get a free RFID EEPROM with every purchase
