Product idea for Dave
« on: September 01, 2010, 07:55:30 am »
Hi all,

Maybe not the correct forum area, but thought I'd post here to at least see what interest
there might be in this.

How about a EEVBLOG series video DVD?

I know a few people who I think would be very impressed with Dave's videos, and one of them, although
being technically proficient doesn't even own a PC or would want to even pay for internet access.
So, being the nice bloke I am would like to share Dave's videos with other people, but as usual, not pay too much for gifts.

Just thought I'd throw the idea out there...

As they are all available on YouTube, I'm not sure what that would achieve really?

Hi Zad,

Thanks for the reply and suggestion.

Well, I would download all of Dave's videos off Youtube, but for the following reasons, I probably wouldn't.

1. I don't have the time.
2. The resolution I think would be pretty low and probably not look great on my friend's TV's, especially
the one who has had laser eye surgery recently.
3. Why use so much internet bandwidth when hi-res video could be available on DVD.
4. I'd like Dave to have another market and make more money.

Can't think of any other reasons at this time, but will try...

As they are all available on YouTube, I'm not sure what that would achieve really?

iTunes will download them for you if you subscribe to the podcast.

The iTunes/Podcast version is only 480x272, and optimised for small file size, so quality is not that great.

Dave.

I kinda briefly thought about a DVD before, as I know another blog (not electronics related) that has released and sells one.
The problem is the other blogs video's are are short, sharp, too the point, and consistent production/video/audio quality.
My videos are long, rambling, and of various dubious quality :->
A DVD stores maybe two hours worth of footage, so that would for example only store a couple of my reviews!
If I did make it available it would likely be in categories, like say tutorials or something.
And given that I've been producing and uploading HD to Youtube, which is watchable on TV's etc, I don't see much of a market for DVD's.
Who'd buy one?

Dave.

I would prefer a Bittorrent.distribution.
Cryptocurrency has taught me to love math and at the same time be baffled by it.

Cryptocurrency lesson 0: Altcoins and Bitcoin are not the same thing.

If you have Firefox, you can install Download Helper which will grab YouTube flv files. Play them back in VLC or similar. As almost all the recent ones on YouTube are 720p, they will be better quality than most standard definition TVs anyway.

Have you seen the touch screens on the new iPod Nanos? Perfect size for a calculator watch ;) But yeah, been there and done that, I wouldn't blame you for not going over old ground.

Hey Dave, the long, rambling stuff I think is what sets you apart because it's like a chat
with a mate - well, a mate who knows what they're talking about at least!
Quality isn't a problem. Just make 'em all 640 x 480 or something reasonable.
And the question of "who'd but one". Well, coming from someone who sells books and t-shirts I'd like to think
quite a few people. Maybe I'm wrong though...
