Weller WSP80 from China?
« on: November 09, 2014, 09:14:58 pm »
I love my WSP 80's, I was looking for another to go with my WSD81 on ebay and came across a seller in China selling "Genuine" WSP 80's for £59 delivered (without vat).

Are these the real deal or not, not heard of fake Weller irons but maybe I am a bit naive?

Has anyone bought one, don't fancy plugging a clone in my base station!

Possibly a heads up for some if they are dodgy!

And another seller with the same pictures:

hard to tell them apart for me too, even the chinese descriptions say they are genuine ...

http://s.taobao.com/search?q=WSP80+&commend=all&ssid=s5-e&search_type=mall&sourceId=tb.index&spm=a214x.6760217.5803581.d4908513

but are they made in china and packed in germany? or they are suppse to be wholly made in germany?

Thanks for the link, did not think to check there!

This is what I wondered, are they made in China or do the have a Chinese version just like the Fluke 1AC's.

However. on this link you can select "Original Authentic" or "High Quality" which means real or fake to me.
The WSP80 on here looks fake

http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.83.72nqkG&id=35206641246&ns=1&abbucket=0#detail

It's got the wrong cable, wrong strain relief, PCB/heater is wrong...

If you think it is genuine, you are naive;

If you think you may be naive, you are not naive enough, :)

No one, other than the manufacturers (Weller or the people faking Weller irons) can tell for you. But chances are that they are fake.

The only sure way is to ask Weller.

Good point!!

Yeah its 4x the price in this country for an Iron, I did think they are fake looking at the cable as it's different to mine, but maybe Weller has cheaped out on cable as even on the Weller website the cable isn't as good as my current WSP80 which is a few years old!

I did think they are fake looking ...

I would agree as well.

However, I am not totally sold on the "genuine" fetish: if a fake works as well as a genuine, does it matter that it is not a genuine?

I have used a few fake 936 stations, made quite a few of them for me and my friends. I would say that based on my experience there, I would NOT pay top dollar for a genuine station.

Now, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't as I have no experience with this particular iron. Depending on the economics and your risk tolerance / expectation, it may not be a bad idea to buy a fake iron ***knowingly***.

Clone and fake of some items are okay and i've bought a few different things.  However this isn't a cheap station, think it cost me around £400+ but that was a few years ago.
If the heating element was cheap I'd buy a knock off iron and put a genuine heating element in it, but they are near the price of a new iron!
What a rip off!

Does anyone use this iron for long time? I bought it as reserve iron, tried and stay to use as main iron. During last several months it works perfect, exactly as original I have. Heating speed and/or heat power, mechanical robustness, all is ok  :-//
