ZD985 and ZD987 review and teardown

Well after understanding the Fake/original (i don't know) ZD917 was kinda crap i decided to try out the ZD985 and ZD987 (even manufacturer replied me these models are much better and improved)

ZD985 features a SMPS while ZD917 features classical transformers. There is no more hot glue trigger happy workers there so the units are clean and nice. The ZD985 is amazingly compact and i suspect the longevity of that SMPS without any cooling. If you don't have a big bottle of nerve pills in your pocket please don't disassemble the ZD985 

However these both units work from start and work quite good. The vacuum is finally inside specs, pumps are still loud (but not as before). The pencil iron on the ZD987 finally has much better and flexible cable. The heaters are also better and desoldering even heatsinks and heatsinked components lasts only a moment.

After desoldering a whole box of components quickly and clean i understood i never want to live without this tools anymore. The ZD985 will be in pair with HAKKO FX888 while the ZD987 will be stand-alone soldering and desoldering tool on second bench.

I can recommend them, you get a whole bunch of spare parts (not that will you need any soon) and when you suck solder only 1 time with this kind of desoldering pump you will never return back especially if you like to recycle electronic components.

I purchased a ZD-985 some time ago,  only recently needed it. I have to say, it is worth its weight in gold when you need it. I removed the 40pin header from my Arduino Mega in less than 2 mins.

For its price, you cant go wrong really.

so just watched the recent EEVblog #542 video and Dave said there is already a tear down post or so...looks like this is the one

kind of curious if suction gun is much more preferred than a solder pot for part salvaging. for the price, 190 bucks, still out of my range for just occasional uses

I’ve seen a few US folks asking where to find this in the EEVblog #542 comments (more on the YouTube comments) and elsewhere. And I've seen no answers so I’m posting this here too in the hopes someone will find this info useful.

No, I don't work for these folks, and I'm not being paid to post this. I just think this is a really great tool for a wonderful price. And I had a hard time finding a vendor here in the US and want to save others a lot of time and effort. =^.^=;;

When I saw the video for this and Dave did the PC motherboard I knew I had to get one of these! =^.^=

Does anyone knows if this unit, the ZD985, can support the 60w soldering iron, part no. 88-415B of the ZD987.

I bought the ZD985 and want to connect the 88-419B of the other unit while not desoldering to save space.

ZD985 can be found at www.memotronics.com in the United States. They have new and refurbished units at reasonable prices. I have bought new and refurbished units from them. Cannot tell refurbished units from new units, refurbished units have same warranty as new units and always come with a brand new gun. They also have parts and accessories such as larger tips and filters. Seems to work well for me.

Good day all

I've slowly been building up a little workshop/ lab as an electronics hobbyist.
I only have one hand so the ZD-985 seemed to be a good and cheap idea.

I purchased one and it worked perfectly for what I needed.
However - I disconnected the vibration switch and something else (not the heater)

Does anyone know how to WIRE UP THE COMPONENTS?

I stripped it to do some tinkering a while ago. Something came up and I havn't touched it since.
