Hello,

I have got this quartz oscillator, does anyone has any idea about technical specs and pinout?

Thanks.

SEI are now known as Rakon, so you could check their website for information.

.  That took much longer than I thought it would.

if it is part of Rakon, good luck on getting specs. I had some ocxo's with date codes of 00-02, and specs are only what you can find online.

I couldn't find anything about it.

However, I am keen to see it working, I am thinking to start with say 3.3v voltage, can someone give a hint about the most common pinot layout or there is no such thing.

I pin is tied to the case but the other 3 are not, one is Vcc, one is Output, one may be not connected?

This is what I get after a little play, 5v Vdc

It does not look like a nice sine wave, any ideas?

Below is the 10Mhz from Anritsu generator terminated in 50ohm, 0dBm

That's not abnormal looking. A lot of these oscillators put out what I like to call a "rounded square wave". In fact, that looks pretty good! No ringing, good amplitude. You shouldn't have any problems using that as a clock source.
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic; e.g., Cheez Whiz, Hot Dogs and RF.

Hi

Here's the most basic question:

You can build a 10 MHz XO from scratch for under $5 and you will know what it does. It may well perform better in your application than the unit you have. Since there are no specs on the unit, and not even a fully filled out label .... tough to know what you have or if it was scrapped rather than sold.

So: What *are* you trying to do with the oscillator you have?

Bob

It might be a 12V oscillator.  I would try increasing the supply voltage a little, and seeing if the waveform improves.  If so, you can (cautiously) take it up to 12V.

It came with a lot of used circuits I bought on Ebay, I don't have any plans to do with it at the moment, just sorting bits and trying to figure out what I *may* do at some point :)

Hi Cio74,

You could try to mail Rakon.
I asked them about Rakon TCXO's I have without info, and I found them very helpful.
My contact was Hugh Tucker, email: Hugh.Tucker@rakon.com

That fourth pin is probably the VCO input, to fine-tune the frequency....

regards & good luck, Gertjan.

Hi cio,

Did you work out what the functions of the four pins are and what the optimal operating voltage is?  I ask because I have recently acquired a similar unit:

    QC1206
    Frequency 94.808 MHz
    Serial No. 721559

  Thanks, Brian.

Hi,

I finally got round to testing and sorting this oscillator. It does work (which is always a worry for second hand stuff from a radio rally).

At 9.0 Volts it draws between 3 mA and 8 mA on the pin diagonally opposite the ground pin. The output is a sinewave, centred on ground, with an amplitude of 2.9 Volts peak-to-peak when loaded only with the 'scope and 1.8 Volts peak-to-peak when loaded with 50 Ohms.

The pin-out, viewed from above (like normal chips are):

+------------------------+
| 4 = Ground ... Out = 3 |
| 1 = N/C .. 9 Volts = 2 |
+------------------------+

Strangely my bench PSU seemed unable to deliver a solid supply, loads of ripple - 840 mVolts! Even with a 47 nF polyester & a 470 pF polystyrene right across the pins the ripple only got down to 530 mVolts. Ah well, the output looked like a clean sinewave no matter what.

Cheers, Brian.
