BNC Connectors in UK
« on: July 25, 2017, 02:54:23 pm »
Hiya

I'm looking for some reasonable quality solderable BNC connectors to attach to RG58 coax with suppliers in the UK as I want them reasonable quickly.

I'm making a couple of 25m cables to go between loop antenna and shack.
As I will be making so few cables at the moment I can't justify buying a decent crimping tool, or compression tool.

Cheers

Getting them from AliExpress is not the way to go if you want them quickly. I am pretty sure you should be able to find them at Farnell/Element14 and RS Components.

Only if you want to buy them from other forum members.

I guess you mean the clamp type, which you do up with a flat spanner?

Just for reference, RS also do that connector. Maybe even cheaper. Probably need an account though.

1. Nope, RS will sell to anyone and also offer free shipping, I use them regularly.

2. Buy a crimp tool and stripper, seriously. You can get a good enough ratchet crimper for £13 and the stripper will cost you ~£5, most of the ones for CCTV will do BNCs for RG58, Maplin sell them. The crimp plugs are trivial to fit with the stripper and ratchet crimp and cost 60p each, if you buy a bag of 100 they're as low as 19p each (and yes, that is a bag of 50R plugs for RG58, not 75R RG59 CCTV ones).

The time and effort saved as well as the price of the plugs will cover the cost of the tools really quickly.

Is that right Cjay? Before i started trading as business, i could not buy anything from RS unless i went to local trade counter and paid there. Because they are supposed to be 'trade only'.. But the guys at the trade counter allowed it to anyone. Maybe they relaxed the rules and opened the doors. But they would not do that for me a few years ago. Been trading with RS for around 20 years but only been an account holder for about 4. Just interested to know.

I use RS regularly. I don't have an account. They treat you well if you don't. I ordered a switch with a 3 month lead time a while ago and got a call once every 4 weeks to ask if I was still happy to wait for it! Just pay up with credit card. I regularly throw a £1-£2 order through and it gets there next day parcel force still as well.

"Account" is a little ambiguous, but the distinction is irrelevant.

Traditional accounts are only of interest if you want to buy things in batches on credit, and pay a bill once per month. But if you pay with a credit card, RS and everybody else doesn't care.

OTOH if you pay by credit card, you are automatically allocated an account.

That is true and it occurred to me after I'd posted, I pay by card but I did/do have a credit facility with them at one point, no idea if it's still in place. I never used it, purely because it would just have been so easy to buy everything I want :)

Paying for it would have been a rather different matter.

Service from them is excellent, I have had a couple of mistakes in orders but it's never been any more trouble than a phone call to put things right.

Marplin also have these, at £2.99:

That said, a crimp tool and crimp connectors is preferable, optionally with a strain-relief boot, such as: http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/bnc-boot-ck08j

Hiya

I have bought these from 3 suppliers now over the past few days - describing then as clamp/solder connectors, unfortunately the description can be misleading in that the cable is clamped by the screw on bolt, or soldered, but the central connector is crimped.   :--

I now have enough that I will have to get a crimping tool  :-DD

Any suggestions for a reasonable quality crimping tool as I've made a complete b***cks of my connector purchases so far....

Cheers

I guess jaycar already  covers some other countries like the UK.
Try this crimping tool.

If you want a really quality one, maybe amphenol is the way to go.

Just choose your flavour!  ;)

Ooo, look RS has some too:
