Can an antique radio be used to pick up digital modes on HF
« on: December 11, 2017, 01:11:26 pm »
This started off  as a simple photo that was posted to a group when I was working with my National 173 boat anchor.  The question became apparent.  Can this 70 year old radio be use to effectively receive digital communications over HF for FLDIGI and other software?

In theory, yes, it will work. Your only problem will be drift (if any) as the software should be able to decode the data through all the background noise and propagation present on HF.

Oh, one other thing:

Catapvltam habeo. Nisi pecvniam omnem mihi dabris, ad capvt tvvm saxvm immane mittam.
Should you find yourself in a chronically leaking boat, energy devoted to changing vessels is likely to be more productive than energy devoted to patching leaks.

Here is the second half [the conclusion] of the project.

Schade... Ich hab doch kein geld aber noch viele steine da hoim....  du darfs eine gratis wenn du sie mochtest...... u. fur die andere leute....

The software does adjust for drift and some noise correction, but only for the locked frequency highlighted.   something exists in the radio that when the bfo is upwards it drifts up and downwards drifts down, im sure with time i could find the culprit.
