orbital bitcoin network, bullshit or ???
« on: August 15, 2017, 04:46:35 pm »
https://blockstream.com/2017/08/15/announcing-blockstream-satellite.html

pretty vague, not a lot of details, no uplink gear listed in the BOM

https://github.com/blockstream/satellite

super slick rollout video

https://youtu.be/lbx7NAnVeGc

I guess it could work, on some level, using terrestrial SMS as uplink...but methinks I smell that age old odor.

thoughts?
I'm new here, but I tend to be pretty gregarious, so if I'm out of my lane please call me out.

I don't know, for a financial system you would need back up satellites ready to go at a moments notice in case of faulty anti satellite weapons tests, north korea, solar flares, etc... would be a disaster if your reliant on it.

It's certainly possible. No reason why some rich guy can't go to a company that makes satellites and have them design it. You would also need a network to maintain global coverage.

Also, how do you prevent denial of service attack if it uses a common protocol to communicate with you with no registration and stuff?
