I will be one of the fat men with glasses, probably not a particularly useful description!

I agree. Travel alone is way too expensive...

Yea, the place is in the middle of nowhere!

There are a couple of workshops I wanted to attend however, and flights are much cheaper if you book them three months in advance....

Accommodation is a pain however, laterooms failed to come thru for me.

Regards, Dan.

Go to Zuerich and take the ferry across the lake?

Actually the real pain in the arse this year is going to be the CCC which is going to be in Leipzig, driven by congress centre availability and size. The place seems to be seriously short on places to stay that are close to the convention centre (Plus, I liked Hamburg, for all that CCH was a bit small).

Regards, Dan.

A one must at least one time in life attend this convention.
I was in 2013. It was much cheaper to find room in Langrickenbach and then go to Romanshorn by car and take a ferry to Friedrichshafen. :-DD
When tried to contact some hotel near by Friedrichshafen, some lady emailed me like "sorry, all hotels in this area are booked few years ahead for this convention". :-DD

I was there. I flew Cardiff, Wales to Munich on Flybe and took a bus from Munich to Friedrichshafen (9 euros each way). The most expensive part of this was the Airbnb for two nights. I agree it's not near a major airport which adds travel time, but  the venue was amazing and I doubt they'd be able to find as good nearly anywhere else.

The local Maker Faire was on at the same time which was also interesting and a festival was going on, the Seehasenfest, which was good fun. The Software Defined Radio Academy set of talks was particularly interesting.

Pics or didnt happen.

Shall you consider visiting CZ ? http://www.ok1khl.com/view.php?cisloclanku=2017031802
"Only" ~3000 visitors, but feeling of this place is different to Friedrichshafen. I like it much more.
There are also many historical sites in this area.

They did actively encourage excersize, what with putting the SDR academy stuff down the far end of the site from the rest of it (~1/4 mile walk each way), and I did think that much of the test gear was somewhat 'optimistically' priced (Might just be that the pound is in the swanny after that bloody stupid referendum so everything looks expensive).

Seehasenfest was an interesting celebration of the start of rabbit season (Or so I understand), but actually mostly seemed to be a celebration of the local brewery, still good fun.

I will do it again sometime, probably with better forward planning in terms of accommodation, travel and transport of heavy things.

Regards, Dan.

I thought the enigma machines (For sale no less, but not cheap) were interesting.

Also, the tables full of former eastern block glassfets, I was tempted by a couple of those enormous  dual tetrodes as a basis for a really silly guitar amp (With about 1,500V DC or so on the plates).

What was it with all the old telegraph printers and domestic AM radios, cool stuff, but really it would have done better to the steampunk crowd next door!
