Harmonic mixers
« on: March 26, 2017, 06:59:59 pm »
Question for the RF gurus: What makes a mixer suitable for use as a harmonic mixer? When searching for harmonic mixer parts on ADI or Linear's website, one can find mixers that multiply the LO by two, I'm interested in a higher multiplication ratio (x5 or higher). Christopher Marki has a couple of videos on Youtube explaining that driving the LO port of a double-balanced mixer with a harmonic-rich signal (square-wave drive) doesn't always give expected results because the LO balun's limited bandwidth won't pass the higher-order harmonics. What would I need to look for when selecting a downconverting mixer to allow me to get a 1x5 or 1x6 IF? Thanks.
