Matching 50 Ohm sig gen to 75 ohm tuner input
« on: March 24, 2018, 01:23:44 pm »
I have just finished repairing a Pioneer f91 tuner that had cracked joints in the FM input module. I realised after I had performed a front and alignment that i was connected  to a 50 ohm output of the Marconi signal generator.
I have two questions that maybe someone could clear up for me.
1 With the mismatch stated, will the effect be negligible, or should I re align the set with it connected to a 75 ohm antenna and just connect a wire to the generators output?
2 Are simple resistive pads good enough or shall I make an "L" pad?

What you are looking for is a MLP, Minimum Loss Pad.
Turns 50 ohm to 75 ohm and vice versa, with a minimum loss of about 6dB, which you just add to signal generators output.

look here for a DIY MLP:

For all but the most critical applications the effects of such a mismatch would not be noticed.

This.
As Peter says, don’t worry about it. The mismatch is only VSWR of 1.5:1, which is not bad at all. Return loss is about 14dB. The power reflected is only 4%.

Thanks Guys that's a big help. I was wondering if the mismatch would make any significant difference , but I built the matching pad in the end.
Cheers. Simon
