I'm a newbie to electronics and found this Sma component. best i can figure its some type if signal coupler. any information would be great in my self-learning endevours

Detector probe.
Built a bit like a directional coupler, but only one direction is detected.
Depending upon the circuitry in the top box, it may output the modulation, or just a dc level.

Yep, agreed, it looks like a directional coupler with a detector tacked on. The two transmission lines are coupled, the one on the top will have a 50 ohm termination at one end, and the detector on the other.  Estimate the length of coupled TX line, and it should be a quarter wavelength, after allowing for a 60-70 percent velocity of propagation in the coax.

I.e. (c*0.7) /( 4*length) = center frequency of operation. For an estimate.  If you have a rf signal generator of the right frequency that can do a pulse, (an AM radio with sufficient depth of modulation and low frequency response may work) you could measure the time constant of the detector, and get an idea on if you can use it for power monitoring or AM demod also.
