Troll the NATO with some Homemade Jaffs?
« on: October 08, 2018, 12:13:07 am »
Here its legal to lett Balloons fly with a Payload <500gram.
So what would happen if I build some Radar Collector and or some Jaffs and let them fly?
How does it would look on the Primary Radar?  >:D

Seems you would be messing more with commercial traffic rather than anything military as I'm pretty sure they would recognize anything like that as unworthy of their interest. It would also be pretty irresponsible and juvenile.

Are you really planning to be an asshole with the only reason being "its not illegal"? :palm: If you do end up causing havoc then expect there to be new laws banning whatever it is you did. The people that legitimately want to release a balloon for good reasons will love you.

"In Internet slang, a troll (/troʊl, trɒl/) is a person who starts quarrels or upsets people on the Internet to distract and sow discord by posting inflammatory and digressive,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the intent of provoking readers into displaying emotional responses[2] and normalizing tangential discussion,[3] whether for the troll's amusement or a specific gain."

I suspect that your proposed trolling methods would be hardly noticed by your intended target.  No doppler.   Very localized.   And other reasons.  So unlikely to accomplish anything like your goals, even if all you want is to let someone know you are unhappy.   The most likely outcome (but highly unlikely fortunately) is that one of your balloons would be run into by some poor commercial or private airplane with something between negligible and tragic consequences.

The German farmer who used a potato cannon to attack incoming flights at an airbase in Germany was much more effective.  But what he learned, and what you would learn if you accomplished anything in your trolling endeavor, is that once you annoy a large powerful organization, that organization has many resources to return the favor, amplified greatly.

If you are fine with that, proceed.  Otherwise, pay very close attention to what Blueskull said.

whats wrong with nato? wanna buy your own military (yea right, хотите понять русский??)

balloons were used offensively in WW2. The military will not take kindly to it nor will it be considered clever.

I don't think it would really matter, and might even provide a limited amount of useful science to somebody who was watching it. Weather balloons are regularly release, carrying radar reflectors, to measure weather conditions. See https://www.instructables.com/id/Lightweight-Radar-Reflector/ if you want to build your own...

On radar it would appear pretty uninteresting - it will not be moving fast, and would have no rotating parts (unlike a helicopter's blades), so would be identified as "mostly harmless", and at best maybe a hazard to aircraft navigation.

There is far worse things that a government can do than start legal proceedings against you for your lawful-but-annoying activities - they can start a tax audit!

See http://www.interestingprojects.com/cruisemissile/ and https://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/12/10/diy_5k_cruise_project_shut/ for another's cautionary tale.
