Change background color of “Subject” so I know where I came from when I return

My standard procedure: I select a “Subject” from the many pages of “Unread posts since last visit”. That takes me to a Topic page. Some times a Topic or Subject is only one page. Other times there may be many pages and I will select one. When I use the “back” button on my mouse to return to the “Subject” page, the only way to quickly tell which Subject I came from is a dotted black line around the Subject, or a dotted black line around the page number if I chose a specific page. It can be very difficult to see this dotted outline. It blends in with the surrounding text. Is there a way to change the background color of the Subject, or the Page number, or the entire Subject cell, or whatever, to yellow, or something much more noticeable than just a dotted black outline? I keep having to figure out “Where was I?” so I don’t miss any Subjects. If there is a way to “outline” text, there is likely also a way to change the background color of the text, etc. Thank you.

Go through the list of subjects, and use the middle mouse button to open in a new tab every time you see an interesting link.

Although I'm sure you could accomplish what you are specifically looking for with a greasemonkey script. But I don't even see the dotted line in firefox, so it might not be so easy.

thm_w: Thanks for the suggestion. Opening a new tab can be helpful, but I would still end up having to go back to the previous tab to resume looking at the long list of subjects available. I would still be asking the question "Where am I??" Where is that subject that I just chose, so I can proceed looking at the subjects below it? A change of background color or some other obvious indicator would be very helpful. I am using Firefox Nightly, version 59.0a1 (2017-11-27) (64-bit).

A similar situation, but within Firefox: I have about 20 tabs open. The currently active tab has a white background. All other tabs have a grey background. It makes the active tab easier to find. Of course, the Mozilla developers have changed the way things work, so a lot of "Legacy" add-ons no longer work. It used to be possible to choose the background color for the active tab and the inactive tabs. I could set the active tab to yellow, or orange, etc. It becomes very clear which tab is active that way.

This forum and many other web sights break visited links.  The solution is to manually configure your browser to always mark visited links ignoring the what the web site tries to do.

Beyond that, the forum does not implement unread messages functionality or threading.  Most do not which is why I prefer email based forums.

A relatively simple compromise is to drag my mouse over some of the text in the Subject box to highlight it. Then click on the subject to go and read about it. When I use the "back" button on my mouse, I am returned to the Subject list and the text of that specific subject is still highlighted, making it super easy to see which subject I clicked on.
