Country Flag
« on: November 25, 2017, 04:57:54 pm »
To the admins:

It might be a good idea to remind after some time
newcomers not having indicated their country
to specify their country flag.

This helps to provide better answers since especially purchasing
conditions and customs regulation differ widely from country to country.

Maybe it should be a mandatory part of the signup process.  If you want, you can choose 'no country', but you must make a choice.

This comes up occasionally. Some people disagree.

Maybe a compromise would be to have some more words about it when you sign up.

Does it come up when you create a new account? Or do you have to go and edit your profile afterwards?

Yes.  Please don't hassle existing members who have deliberately chosen not to set this field, for privacy reasons.  Its our responsibility to provide our approximate location when relevant.

Perhaps our admins could add a UN 'country' flag (labelled "World" or "Planet Earth") for those who prefer to identify themselves as citizens of the world, so we can be distinguished from 'unset'.

Do *you* know all the country flags?  I certainly don't.  Nor do I wish to learn them all.

No.

But you can hover and the tool-tip/alt-text/whatever tells you.

By now I find it half of the fun of the forum, guessing what flag is what.

You don't need to learn them, just mouse over the flag. Plus those flags are pretty small.

This plays out on a lot of forums. The thing that bugs me is when some one answers a question from a poster who has no location info, it's not uncommon to get a complaint about presumptions. "That doesn't help, we don't have xxxx" is common. If they don't say where they are, I find it arrogant when they complain about help.

That is actually enabled and forced in the settings, but it doesn't seem to work.

Antarctica...

I do know Antarctica isn't a country, but a collection of territorial claims and research bases from many different countries. I hope anyone who claims to be from there actually is one of the small group of full or part-time residents, if they expect me to take anything else they say seriously.

Shipping stuff there, especially anything larger than an envelope, will depend on which country administers the destination and what time of the year it is. Winter delays measured in months are common for the more remote bases.

So its simply a matter of getting this going. :-+
I would be perfectly happy with 00 entries since I would expect
most newcomers to indicate their country anyway. Problem solved.

When a persons nationality and their location are not the same, it seems fair that they get to choose which to use. After all, the instruction: "Please select your country" is pretty ambiguous in that respect. And sometimes one choice is more relevant than the other for the purposes of this forum. It's not always about shipping issues.

Then there are some that get multiple valid choices, such as United Kingdom vs England. Also a matter of choice.

The only real reason for setting the country flag is so people can have a better chance of giving regionally appropriate information, I don't thing nationality needs to come into it.

Apart from a very few people who might possibly live in politically sensitive countries, I can't see why anyone should object to setting their flags.
Best Regards, Chris

exactly, flags do come handy when talking about procurement of some stuff. Who doesn't seem to need this type of "help", can go without a flag. Really no biggie.

Since blueskull is Chinese, he probably feels as if he's not free to fly the American flag. Even if he wanted to.
As far as myself and Antarctica? It was spur of the moment. I have known a lot of people who spent significant amounts of time there, and also, until it sprung a leak, and catastrophically deflated, I used to have a larger than life size, highly realistic looking  inflatable Emperor penguin in my office, so I have a sort of affinity to Antarctica.

I do know most of them, because I'm a ham radio operator.
I told my friends I could teach them to be funny, but they all just laughed at me.

I wish that on the mobile version of the forum the country was shown on a user's profile page.

It's obviously not practical to show the usual user info alongside each post due to lack of space, but to not be able to look up that information at all when on mobile is often annoying and an impediment to replying with pertinent info.

The only user profile info shown on the mobile version of the page is 'Age', which is almost always not filled in (and thus 'N/A') and largely irrelevant anyway.

Could we maybe have continent 'flags', or a EU one? That's often much more relevant than the specific country.
