dark theme
« on: March 03, 2018, 12:00:16 am »
I would love a (optional) forum color scheme that is light text on dark background. That would be very easy on the eyes. Especially in evenings.

If you want to make things easier on the eyes - make sure the lighting around your screen is of a similar brightness as the screen itself.  It can be a bit less, but what you don't want is a bright screen surrounded by darkness in your field of view.  This lighting needs to be diffuse - indirect works well - and you don't want to have the bare bulb or any bright spots from the lighting anywhere in your field of view.

Your pupils will dilate to suit the average brightness - which makes the screen too bright for comfort.

Source:  I spend HOURS on the computer every day - and this tip makes a HUGE difference (for me, at least).

(I have even put an LED strip around the back of my TV to light up the wall a bit for this reason.)

Thanks, but I think anybody with eyeballs figured that out.

I would still like the theme. Photo software has it. Youtube has it.

Maybe you could go to https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/styles/board_styles/dark-17 and select a preferred style. Then send Dave a message if that theme could be added to the selection.
You would save him time going through possible options and integration should be easy. The architecture is already there but only one user has opted for a different skin at the moment :)

Other options include browser extensions like »stylish« or »custom style script« that let you overwrite CSS with your own styles per webpage / URL

I'm using an extension right now and the results are not great. I'll take a look at the style options and make a suggestion. Thanks.

Just use an extension. I am using this for firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/dark-background-light-text/

Attached is how your post looks. If you don't like it you can tweak the colors or find another extension.
I've also modified my monitors to dim the backlight brightness to lower levels (often they are still very bright at the lowest setting, which might be 50% PWM say).

I put together a dark theme for Google Chrome using the Stylish extension

   https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/forum-dark-theme/msg1362387/#msg1362387

You should be able to incorporate it into your browser of choice.

Your screenshot look really good, Mark.
How do I use your theme? Does it affect other website?

If you're using Chrome, download and install the Stylish extension:
  • Go to Settings (3 dots upper right) >> More Tools >> Extensions
  • Get More Extensions (bottom of page)
  • Find and install the Stylish extension
  • Go to Options under the Stylish extension and cut and paste the my EEVblog-dark.css into a new style
  • Applies to "URLs starting with" "http://www.eevblog.com/" (below edit code section)
  • Save style
I hope that's clear enough.  With the "Applies to" option, it will only affect the EEVblog website. The default is to apply it to ALL websites.

If you have stylish, you have integration with userstyles.org:

https://userstyles.org/styles/127564/eevblog-forum-flat-greyscale

Alternatively, MarkF could also upload his CSS to userstyles so it's easier to install and update.

For Windows IE users:  Use the EEVblog-dark.css directly with the "User style sheet" option in the Internet Options >> Accessibility section.  However, this applies to ALL websites.  Not just the EEVblog forum.

I didn't realize it was possible to upload my theme.
The dark theme should now be available at userstyles.org

I would prefer to not bloat my browser with unnecessary extensions if possible. I suggested a couple of themes to Dave about 5 days ago but he didn't reply.

Set the extension to only run on the eevblog.com/forum URL and it won't affect other pages.
Its not "bloat" when it has a specific useful purpose :palm:

In actuality Stylish is one of the very few "Theme" addon's that doesn't slow down websites. The way it handles themes is instantaneous and doesn't add anything to websites to make them slower. I myself am using it for things like facebook and google. It just runs wonderfully. You should give it a try.

I have just updated my dark theme at userstyles.org with font changes and minor color changes for locked threads and for links.
   https://userstyles.org/styles/156638/eevblog-forum-dark-theme

I have also moved to the Stylus extension for Google Chrome.  Stylus is open source.  Chrome blocked Stylish because it was collecting user data.

I found it hilarious that Google, of all companies, would block someone for collecting data.
Any way, I will move over to Stylus as well...

Nice work!  :-+
I'm using it on Firefox, just installed the Stylus addon https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/styl-us/ and then got the theme from userstyles.org

I've had to go back to the horrible light theme since Stylish committed seppuku.

I wish Stylus would come out for Chrome.

Thanks for all the responses!    Enjoy!!

My old eyes have problems with small fonts and the bright background.  Especially when reading for long periods.

Tired of quotes containing large pictures or Youtube videos?
I am!

I modified my "Dark Theme" for the EEVBlog to force picture and video sizes to small thumbnails in the quote.
The pictures and video sizes in the original post are unchanged.
