I know you're not into ham radio but you do like space(who doesn't...). If there is a well enough equipped amateur operator/station/club near you that can do voice based earth moon earth contacts it might be worth looking in to. It is rather neat to hear your own voice echo off the moon(~2.5 second delay). Assuming it doesn't get too technical you could talk about the free space path loss and the total system gain needed to overcome it etc.
Hams have also bounced signals off of Mars and Venus - due to the loss I believe both of those feats are data only.

There are also lots of fun activities such as amateur radio designed satellites, contacts with ISS and there are hidden transmitter(fox) hunts.
