- OpenDocument is a real ISO standard ( ISO/IEC 26300) even growing it's use by municipalities and governments.

Good news maybe this will save taxpayers some money?

To help this movement I suggest Dave open up these formats to the forum and close MS formats.  Most of us have given up on our dial phones so this would just be a step forward.  I would like the idea of never opening a xls file again.

When I said "standard MS format", I meant "standard MS proprietary format"

don't be silly, you can't argue for one format and want to effectively ban another.

don't be silly, you can't argue for one format

-->  free and available to the masses including the 3rd world

and want to effectively ban another.

---> not free and not available to the masses including the 3rd world

I see no problem in helping mankind by a restriction.   However it is probably not practicable, it would take a lot of guts.

I think we have to compromise and use both because there will always be those that have and those who do not have.

Google Drive Spreadsheets. It's just a webpage, no-one even needs to download a file with any extension. Plus, people can comment in-line if you want.

1) You can download XLS backups, 2) We are talking about a solution for sharing spreadsheets on an online forum, And 3), it actually works fine offline if you choose the "work offline" thingy.

So all in all, I'd claim your objections pale in comparison to the disadvantages of XLS or ODS attachments (specifically, the need for every single person viewing your post to clutter their Download folder with your file, and install the right software.) PDF, text, or HTML tables are perfectly suitable for a forum, but of course you lose the editability/interactivity.

We are looking at sharing file and grup editing them. Not everyone want a google account or to go to that level. Best thing is we allow the open formats that have been overlooked and then everyone can do as they please.
