Lab Reference Clock: Explanation and demonstration

This is actually a question I just realized I did not know the answer to:
Why would one use a lab reference clock?

I imagine I'm not the only beginner that does not really know what it's needed for, and I think it would make for a nice episode with a great deal of traps for young players.

What do you think?
