Own videos for design kits / ICs from mailbag
« on: August 07, 2017, 01:25:32 pm »
So I just watched Dave's most recent Mailbag video, and @35min he shows a breakout board and next he unboxes a Sillygo reset chip design kit.
He didn't go into to town with these, and I think we all know why. I totally agree with only briefly looking at it in the mailbag videos, but I'd still like to see that stuff showcased in a separate video.

I can't be the only one interested in seeing all these discovery kits / chips / breakout board solutions showcased in their own video category... RIGHT?! I mean there seem to be quite some of these manufacturer-sent-in products, that just can't be set up and properly demonstrated (and maybe even explained?) in a mailbag, and I imagine not all of them deserve their very own video. Splitting these things off Mailbag would keep the (sometimes) awkward, "self-sponsored" parts, with stuff sent in by companies, off the mailbag videos, to create a new category of videos about only them.

That new video category would actually show the sent-in products in use, performing a task or something, seeing if it does what it claims to do and how. I'm certainly interested in watching videos about these things (like that reset chip), how they work, how to add them to your design, just giving some exposure to new or interesting solutions that get sent in by manufacturers, but collect dust somewhere in a bunker(?) after being unboxed on mailbag. Even if I won't ever use that specific chip or implementation to do the job, it's still interesting to see what new products there are, and what I can accomplish with them.

And lastly, I wouldn't mind if these videos were sponsored by some company who sent stuff in, a chip producer, a supplyer or what not. DavidĀ² could prepare work by setting up a showcase to display some waveforms on the scope or measure specs. I'm speaking to you, Dave. Even with no sponsor, there's still YouTube ads and perhaps Amazon affiliate links. But I think these vieos in particular would be a great sponsorship opportunity, because you gotta buy that stuff SOMEWHERE, y'know. And while I can't speak for others, I wouldn't mind a hint at where to buy these things to support the channel. You could even make some of those companies, who get free exposure from you on Mailbag, support you by engaging with them to do a sponsored "Showcase"-type video. I hope that's enough bribing for you!

tl;dr Make videos about those Kits/ICs that take too long for mailbag, like a "New Products" videos by Adafruit, but with fewer, actually interesting products, seen put to use and explaining some of the stuff alongside. Dave doesn't have to showcase every single new Item he gets, but he can pick and chose the best stuff for video material, and produce a 20-30 minute video about them, going more in-depth.

What do you think?
