Repairing Stuff or Repairing Stuff for Repairing Other Stuff
« on: October 23, 2017, 08:26:17 pm »
Can we split out Repair Test Equipment from Repair please? Well over half of Repair is about test equipment, which is a specialized topic. At the moment this is jumbled up with the odd confused person asking about repairing a lawnmower or such like. Ideally it would be best to have sub forum such as:
  • Test Equipment
  • Computer Hardware
  • AV Equipment
  • Other

Yeah, I know. I read the forum for that and have a pile of such equipment :)

It does make you wonder if the test equipment is just for fixing other test equipment  :-DMM

It just seems odd to have random other questions in the same forum as well.

Bad idea.

The problem with all taxonomies is that they presume a single hierarchy is The One True Way.It never is; the world and thought processes are too complex and varied for that.

Example: is the hierarchy based on manufacturers or on type of equipment "more correct"? HP/Tek/Fluke vs scope/multimeter/logic analyser/spectrum analyser?
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.
Glider pilot's aphorism: "there is no substitute for span". Retort: "There is a substitute: skill+imagination. But you can buy span".
