Searching the forum
« on: June 04, 2018, 12:25:15 am »
The forum search barely works. It's pretty much unusable. Can nothing be done about it?

(It wouldn't even tell me if there were already any related topics about this)

If you use the forum search (including the quotes) "site:eevblog.com/forum" you will find where it has been discussed before.

I think this will work better....

1. Go to a Google search page
2. Type in site:eevblog.com/forum (without quotes) followed by your search words, eg: tektronix
3. Press "Enter"

You will get something like this:

Thanks, I know how to use Google.

Would be nice if the forum's search worked, eh?

Well I think it should get attention. It's in everybody's best interest. It would reduce the duplicate questions that get asked over and over again because we can't easily find existing answers. As you've remarked, people are quite lazy, and they won't use Google.

You could have the best search in the world and people would still be lazy.

Of course. But it's better than nothing.

While I, too, find the SMF search somewhat underwhelming, it is sometimes good to remember that this is an add-on feature for software that has a lot more functionality.

Google, on the other hand, has its search function as a primary feature and you can expect more from it.

It's 2018. Search should be considered a "primary feature" on ANY website.

The forum is only as good as the SMF software it's run on.
gnif has optimized the new server in an effort to improve Search results but SMF is what it is.

I can find most things I want here but some of it's down to memory of just which member has made a post and then you can add that into the Search parameters. Any additional fields added helps with results but SMF could be much better in this regard.

Another big forum I frequent seems to have a much more complex Search capabilities and their forum SW is XenForo now after they migrated from SMF a couple of years ago.
Certainly seems more capable:

If there's a bug, then a report should filed. Problems don't get solved by throwing up your hands and saying "it is what it is!"

People sure seem quick to come up with excuses.

Right.

I for one have suggested Dave shift the forum to a different provider but it's his forum and he can choose to use whatever forum SW he wants. He owns the forum SW and it's his right to report bugs in it if he chooses to.
AFAIK the SMF community addresses their own problems and do release patches and addon's on occasion.
Dave installs the odd one too, Thanks and Shift Topic are a couple of recent ones.

If you're so incensed why don't you join the SMF forum yourself and lobby there for changes to the SMF Search capabilities ?

What gave you the idea that I was incensed? I only gave my opinion and stated fact. No drama.  :-//

There are already a number of existing threads which discuss the faulty or flawed search issue, probably the main discussion which Dave himself created is located in the News section directly beneath this one.

I'll quote your own message: "If there's a bug, then a report should filed. Problems don't get solved by throwing up your hands and saying "it is what it is!" People sure seem quick to come up with excuses.""

Yet you're telling us you're not willing to file a report or act otherwise and come up with excuses.  ;D

In fact, why are you even posting, troll?

Thank you. Perhaps I'll join the discussion there. This thread is getting too poisonous for my liking anyway.

You've been kindly pointed in the direction where reporting your woes might be useful, yet you refuse to act upon this information. Instead, you insist in displaying a grating attitude and now resort to calling other forum goers names. You don't seem to be here to do something constructive. You seem to be here to kick the beehive.
