Video change suggestions for youtube.
« on: January 13, 2015, 10:07:09 pm »
Hey Dave,

I had a few suggestions that I have been saving up and today I hit the commit point.

Request one.

It is a small thing but some times depending on the content it makes a big difference.  I currently watch your episodes on TV using a Roku and the YouTube channel.  I am not an expert have done a bit of video editing and I think the issue has to to do with over scan. Normally when shooting and editing video there are portions of the image that is considered safe for text and safe for action.  If future episodes were not so zoomed in it should solve the issues.  Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overscan show some good definitions.  I have attached a screen shot of your latest episode that shows the problem.

Request two.

As stated above I watch your episodes on a Roku with the YouTube  channel.  They have recently changed their interface to look more like your YouTube web age.  I can see why this makes sense but unfortunately they did not copy the web page fully.  Your YouTube page shows some popular episodes and groupings that you have done.  Unfortunately there is no easy way to get a list of episodes in order this means that your latest episodes done show up.  If you could adjust your home page to list all episodes that would be great.

Request three.

Awhile ago you had an episode showing off your new wireless mic.  It seems like some of your newer episode where you are switching cameras for your different shots your voice gets picked up better on some then others.  If you could use you wireless mic I think you would have a nice consistent sound.

I hope this a good place to post this request and that you don't take too much offense.  I love the work you do  please keep it up.

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott,

Overscan/underscan/title/gfx/action safe markers were mostly effective/used to matter on CRT televisions and/or monitors as there was a great portion of the image/video used be inside the non visible areas of the CRT, meaning the part inside the cabinet. The image size in CRTs also used to differ from one to another due to manual adjustments of the image size. Brightness level in different scenes also used change the size of the image in CRT tv/displays.

Most of the LCD/Plasma displays/tvs shows 100% of the original acquired image/video by the camera or a CG created with computers. Thanks to the fixed-pixel technology in the LCD displays.

You can try using the Roku with another TV/monitor to check if the problem is with the Roku or the LCD tv it self.

The post/request was to Dave, sorry I replied, please excuse me if I shouldn't have.

I also produce video, and most of us in the video world have almost completely forgotten about the safe action area and safe title area because we didn't think that anybody was still using old overscanned CRT television screens anymore.  Although I see that some broadcasters and advertisers still use 4x3 title-safe areas.  People watching on modern LCD televisions see the entire edge-to-edge frame (like on your computer).

Last time someone asked, Dave said that it was too much trouble to use the wireless mic and that the camera-mic audio quality was "good enough" for his audience, so buzz-off.  But apparently they clamor for high-resolution and even high frame-rate video even though neither Dave nor what he is doing move all that rapidly on-camera.
