121GW - calibration killed after Firmware-Update?!
« on: October 18, 2018, 07:15:26 pm »
Hi!

After updating my meter from 1.21 to 1.51 my calibration-data is partially killed.  |O
I restored my backup, but that didn't fix the problem.

Is there something else, I can do, except sending it in for a recalibration?

Can someone post his cal-file, so that I can test it to exclude a hardware-problem?

Here is my cal-file, decoded with the script I found in the forum:

You should put this thread in the right gw121 issues : https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/eevblog-121gw-multimeter-issues/

Here's a text file like yours and the BIN.  Looks fairly similar, why do you think it's killed?

Having 2V DC on the input, gives me
in R0 2V DC
in R1 2VDC
in R2 2V DC
in R3 287V DC
in R4 OFL

Having 5V AC (50Hz) in the input, gives me
in R0 5V AC
in R1 a small voltage, counting down to 0V
in R2 same
in R3 same
in R4 same

If I raise DC voltage in autorange-mode
54V are OK, 100V on input results in 348V on the meter, 200V on input gives 408V on the meter.

I also tried the cal-data from bicycleguy - if my meter accepted the data - the result was the same.

I'm also confused, whats described in the manual, p52 ... both descriptions end up with
"The calibration data will now save to the SD card". My meter everytime shows "save"
at the end and I don't know, what happens ...

I think, something is seriously wrong here. Anything else, I can do without running a complete calibration-procedure?
I'm thinking about sending the meter in for a check.
Here in Germany the meters were shipped from a company called Welectron - the also offer calibration-services for test equipment.

*confused*

Hi!

After updating my meter from 1.21 to 1.51 my calibration-data is partially killed.  |O
I restored my backup, but that didn't fix the problem.

...

I am not sure what is meant by "I restored my backup".  It sounds like you are messing about with both the calibration file as well as the firmware version.  Did you reinstall both the 1.21 firmware along with your original calibration file?  And when you say install, did you actually install them into the meter or just copy them to the card?  I sounds like you may be confused how to do this so I wanted to make sure.

Did you make these same measurements prior to making the changes?  I would assume you have this data or would not be blaming the firmware upgrade.

I have not really done anything with the newer versions of firmware beyond 1.26.  If there was a major problem like this with the firmware, I would have thought a lot of people would be posting about it but maybe not.

I'm confused too.  There's no way putting my cal data in your meter could do anything good :scared:

I thought you were just going to look at it to see if yours looked hosed.

That would worry me too.  The whole purpose of having individual cal data is to address the variations in components from unit to unit.

The best case scenario of doing that would be to bring such a meter into readings that would look sane - but there is no way in the wide, wide world of sports that I would consider that meter accurate.  No way.  Not ever.  I just would not even try loading up someone else's cal data.

This is a reasonable thing to do.  Just a side by side desk check.
