34970A Transformer - Part # HP 9100-5608 - Mfg. Tranex # 14-7522
« on: December 20, 2013, 06:24:25 am »
Since I almost only do DC and 'a few' kHz, I used my new "moderate frequency hobbyist oscilloscope" savings money to buy 3x Agilent 34970A DAQ/Switch units and an Escort 3146A DMM (total USD 340 - not too bad imo). I can get by with a sound card as before ...

One unit will probably run good after change of battery. It passes full self test with a (swapped DMM board from one of the 'dead' units - good sign) most of the time with 2 AAA in parallel with the 3 V Li***-battery. I am waiting for a MUX card (USD 200 on fleabay  :wtf:). If it becomes well behaved it will get a life as permanent voltage ref babysitter.

Two units have broken transformer primary winding, and must have been run with 220 V in 110 V connection. No signs of burning inside box - and secondary windings are OK. So the main board might have survived. Will swap the running transformer around a sunny day :D

All I can find is:

Searching "Tranex 14-7522" as in the manual BOM '9100-5608 1 XFMR-PWR 100/120/220/240V 02859 14-7522' from

http://cp.literature.agilent.com/litweb/pdf/34970-90012.pdf

p. 183 gives no hits but the manual itself.

Anyone can help find a transformer or two - from a dealer or from an abandoned box?

Also - I am too lazy to run for new old batteries. In the 34972A part of the manual it says 'use a CR2032'. Anyone tried this?

Thanks.

Thanks.

I'll take what you have - if the price is right.

I have found out that the transformer part no. is obsolete - the new part is:

Part Number:      34970-87901
Part Description:      Transformer
Price:      US$ 43.95Add to Cart
Quantity on Hand:      17
Item Status:      Orderable

I have already bought the 07 mixed card (USD 72 fleabay) and the 16 ch mux 02 (150 USD fleabay). My offer USD 150+50 shipping on the 01 mux was declined. Do you have the 20 ch 01?

You can post your prices here or in PM. Since the dead machines didn't kill at least one DMM unit, I won't be surpriced if they both work. (The max primary is for some 18 V DC - so normal regulators withstanding 35-40 volts should have survived).

I have ordered some batteries from fleabay Germany, but I'd like to get some approved part number batteries in case I sell a machine or two.

I can pay by PayPal, Visa card, bank, Western Union or whatever to anywhere you like. You must ship to Thailand.

Please decide what you think is fair for your effort. Thanks.

Seems I have been lucky. While swapping a battery, I noticed that the receiving machine had one battery leg more or less 'not soldered'. I do not know if there was permanent ohmic contact before (the box is not supposed to run w/o battery - even a dead one is necessary to power it), but now - with an original battery reading ca. 2.78 V (min. op. voltage is 2.7) and a DMM swap - the machine passes self test after self test.

It has firmware revision from 2002, but had only some 300 relay cycles when I started to test it. So it is practically unused. It might be a lemon that has been stored due to the undiscovered (possibly) bad soldering. (It is very clean inside compared to one of the other machines of the same period because the fan has almost never run).

I could clearly see that there has never been a battery change (mask and flux changed visibly after my battery change). The original battery was som 2.48 V (which is below the 2.7 treshold). The error 625 (usually processor/FRAM) disappeared with the battery swap.

So a 'new old' box. From Agilent stripped some USD 1700 - on fleabay some USD 500-1000+. Imo, i.e. Will be fun when I get the cards. Even if I won't utilise its full potential, it is in fact a second 34401A DMM with a programmable mux/switch for test setups. Nice box ...
