34Ch Chinese LA
« on: August 27, 2013, 03:39:50 pm »
I've been looking at getting a logic analyser mostly for use in repairing dead arcade / old home computer PCB's. Hooking it up to the address bus should give me a good idea of what action the CPU is getting upto, etc.

The most obvious choice is one of the many 8 channel Saleae clones on eBay, which would be pretty handy, but a bit limiting on sample lines. But then I spotted a 34ch unit with synchronous sampling (handy as I'd hook it to the CPU clock) and a reasonable spec. But as ever with these Chinese devices, the software is likely to be crap.

Does anyone have any experience with this LA?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/34CH-125MHz-PC-USB-Logic-Analyzer-34-channel-with-support-I2C-SPI-UART-and-PWM-/281112841218?pt=UK_Computing_Other_Computing_Networking&hash=item4173a18c02

Cheers!

If you want the CD with the software let me know. But be warned it sucks.
I bought the LWLA2034 and does not work well.

Thanks for the reply, I had a feeling it would probably not be worth the money.

I think I'll have a punt with a Saleae clone (cant got wrong for £10) then if that's no good probably check out the LAP-C.

Please do not buy this shit.
  - It overheats, so, I add the heatsinks that you can see in the attached file.
  - The signal integrity (memory-FPGA) is not maintained. No ground plane, and tr< 800ps.  :o
That is why you can see aluminum adhesive on top in the attached picture.
  - The RC network is not well calculated, and DC level to set the threshold has a lot of ripple.  :wtf:
  - And to finish, SW language is Chinese (only).

So, please do not buy this shit.  :wtf: :o :-- :-BROKE :palm:  :'(

And by request via PM the SW (my english version): http://www.filedropper.com/sysclk
The software is based on the miniLA. http://minila.sourceforge.net/

LOL... Is a big crap.

Seems that there is another SW, but I've only seen pictures:

This looks like a rare version of logic sniffer ols.

I've got a Saleae logic 16.  I have to say it is well worth it for the quality of their software.

aren't the LWLAxxxx based on MiniLa ? i think they are, remember some discussion on ourdev.cn about

Yes! Where?? I prefer that to what was written in Chinese. :-DD
Ok, now I see where:  High quality SW and HW.  Right now I'm laughing a lot, thank you very much.  :-DD

Of that, I am not responsible.  :phew:

found it,

http://www.amobbs.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=5068722

in LWLA1016 the developer took the Minila vhdl, ported it from Xilinx CPLD to Altera FPGA and added SDRAM controller (instead of NoBL SRAM as in MiniLA). However he leaved compatibility to the software (as far i understood) - see picture attached.

The other models are then in principle "imporved" designs

Purchase the LWLA1034 from a Chinese vendor who provided a link to download the software .   Link was via pan.baidu.com.  Link didnt work so I'm looking for some guidance on how to obtain the software LWLA1034_2014_iso.  Maybe the pan.baidu doesnt allow downloads from the US ?
Any help would be appreciated , I do understand that  SIgrok open source does support the LWLA1034 , however PulseView does have much more functionality.
Thanks
Hank

Well you could always go for an Agilent E3940A Logicwave. 34Chan, 100MHz State, 250MHz timing. Proper Agilent probes with adjustable logic threshold. I have one from new.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Agilent-LogicWave-E9340A-PC-Hosted-Logic-Analyzer-/252177003710?hash=item3ab6ebb4be:g:ozAAAOSweW5U4By3

THE DOWNSIDES:

1. Designed for Win98 but DLL available to run on XP. (driverX.sys)
2. Needs a parallel port, they never supported the USB connector.
3. No Protocol Analysers.
3. Only 128k samples.

Also can't see any clips in the listing.

However it is still a 'proper' Agilent logic analyzer with proper probes and signal integrity and worth keeping a dedicated old laptop for.

Product page:

http://www.keysight.com/en/pd-1000000942%3Aepsg%3Apro-pn-E9340A/logicwave-pc-logic-analyzer?nid=-536902557.536880599&cc=GB&lc=eng

Don't all  rush at once!  :)

P.S. It's not my listing!
Best Regards, Chris

^ The ***BIG*** downside is the need for the Parallel Port. It will *NOT* work with a USB/Parallel port adapter etc etc.

So, you need an OLD laptop/PC to use it. I know, I have one (was free) and yes, HP *NEVER* implemented the USB support (even though the unit does have a USB port on it), so basically it's a neanderthal product...

cheers,
george.

Yes, I should have mentioned USB-Parallel adapter not working, it needs to be a genuine PC ECP parallel port (LPT1/2).

It was about the first product to bear an Agilent rather than HP brand in 2000. I suspect it was the first real PC hosted analyzer. It won awards for it's usability and value for money.

We moaned like crazy to Agilent about the USB support, which was supposed to be added shortly after release.  Apparently the development team got right up the noses of the mainframe guys who though they were encroaching on the territory and politically stamped on them. Shame. Still proper acquisition H/W and probes though (100k 1.5pF), none of your cheap ribbons. I've long hoped that someone would have enough internal info to add the USB, or even separate protocol decoders but doubt if it will ever happen now!

P.S. IBM Thinkpads probably supported parallel ports longer than most (certainly T42/43, not sure about T60).
