Banggood scopes, authenticity?
« on: September 25, 2018, 08:15:27 pm »
Hi all

Please go easy, I tried the search, it was a challenge!

The Rigol 1052e/1054z caught my eye, can you help?

1.  Are the Banggood scopes rip-offs or actually authentic?
2.  Rigol-uk are actually similarly priced, but can the firmware be 'upgraded' 50-100MHz?
3. Bearing in mind the similar cost, are there any advantages buying from one or the other?

Cheers
Lea

Forum search is broken, use Google search instead, eg. "eevblog DS1054z"

Authentic.

2.  Rigol-uk are actually similarly priced, but can the firmware be 'upgraded' 50-100MHz?

Yes.

(and all other options unlocked)

If prices are similar I'd get one from Rigol for guarantee reasons.

Thanks fungus, I was also thinking similar 're Rigol distro vs BG but was pondering the firmware 'upgrade' opportunity.

I guess similar is true of the Hantek DSO5072P?

I'm also keeping my eye out on eBay for an secondhand  inexpensive storage 20MHz Hameg/Gould/Tek

I will be avoiding the nano ST32 type portapotty scopes don't panic!  Want to start my boy off in the right direction.

Cheers

Hantek isn't well regarded around here:

Plus: Four channels is the number to go for. Kids these days are into microcontrollers and robotics.

It would have to be very cheap to be worth getting. A DSO can do much more and takes up a lot less bench space.

I spotted that post after your helpful suggestion of using Google to search :-)

and very valid points, but from my perspective it's rather horses for courses.  I want to see how interested the boy is in using quite such a complex device for testing.  He has only just begun his adventure into uC and currently more focused on RC at this time in his electronics aspirations.  So giving him a cheaper pie to see how big he bites is my thinking - then if it inspires/excites could treat him a later stage - the key is introduction and an opportunity to teach him.

I remember starting my apprenticeship using a Hameg 20MHz analogue - those were the days!

Are there other issues with the Hantek range other than the original dicky firmware - which has probably been resolved - would be good to see a honest review from Dave...

Cheers

Remember if buying direct from China
- import duty and VAT are payable on stuff over £18
- returns for warranty can work out expensive, even if the dealer is good

While I buy lots of cheap tat (for a few pounds) direct from China all the time, it may not be such a good idea for a more expensive purchase

If he's into uC then he needs 4 channels.

"Complex"? He'll have it in ten minutes.

PS: A  Rigol will hold it's value much more than a Hantek if you ever decide to sell it.

Returns to Banggood...little chance of that working out well!  Yes good point indeed, thanks for refoccussing me, it's easy to get overly biased towards the initial cost only.

If he doesn't bite I could always commandeer it 😂🤣😆
