Title: Battery pack for DS1000z and others
Post by: frog7227 on January 06, 2017, 12:12:26 am
I don't know if anyone has done this in this manor yet, not that I found at least. This uses a device called a Lenmar Chugplug, which is a power bank for Macbook Airs and the 13" Pro.
It claims to output anywhere from 120-250VDC. I measured it at ~160VDC unloaded and with the scope plugged in and on at ~190VDC. It is rated for a max of 65W on its output.
All you have to do is make a cable to convert the figure 8 male end into a standard IEC connector.
The internal Li-Ion cells are specced at a total of 44Wh on the box, but I haven't measured the capacity myself.
It even came with a nice carry bag  8).
The ground is not passed through to where the Macbook charger would reside.
It will not start the DS1000Z if you use its power button, but if you switch the Rigol on then the chug plug on it works fine. I'd bet on the inrush current is at play and the boost converter shuts off because of it.
Here is a video of it working: https://youtu.be/iT9rzmCduD4
Photos of the adapter cable I made are attached. Hotsnot makes anything stay  ;D.
Here is where I got mine from for $9.99 shipped in the US: eBay auction: #131788905655

Interesting,
Have you timed how long it will keep the Rigol running?
I see input power on Rigol ~ 50 watts max

Thanks for sharing

Nice price too

I just got it earlier and so far haven't had time to measure how long it lasts.
But as a back of the envelope calculation I measured the power at 110mA @ 185VDC in so 20w consumed (just one channel on, looking at the probe cal signal). If the internal boost converter in the chugplug had an 85% efficiency, it'd last just under 2 hours. Will test and post the results when my chug plug is fully charged.

Just got done testing the battery life with the DS1000z and the chugplug. From a full charge to when the scope shuts off was 1:58. Pretty darn close to the expected. Assuming the internal battery does have a capacity of 44Wh, the internal boost converter is roughly 92% efficient. (Also assuming the DS1000z constantly consumed 20.35W measured before.)
P.S. On the packaging it says the internal LiPo pack is 4Ah @ 11.1V (~44Wh), so maybe salvaging the charging and boost conversion circuitry might also be worthwhile. I'll be opening it up when I have the time.

I just got a DCDC 70W Boost Converter 12-24V to 100-250V from ebay (eBay auction: #291630618577) for 10$. Set to 100V
I tested it with a USB Charger @10W as load, a quick "screenshot" attached.
The Rigol runs on it as well, DC Input is 12.3V 1.9A. Later I will power it from 5000mAh 3S LiPo Packs from Hobbyking (24$) => 2h battery life / 12V Car Plug

I think I'll do a short post of my whole quick-mount battery system when finished. I will make a battery box mounted at the threads of the metal shielding (you have to drill holes in the plastic backcover)

FWIW: People have tested the DS1045Z in other threads and it runs happily on 48V DC.

But there might be a reason for input range 100V... For me its no difference wether using a Boost from 12V to 60V or to 100V.

Sure, I'm just saying 48V is the lower limit (IIRC).

Lower boost voltage means less current from the DC converter output but more current on the input. It's a balancing act.
