Binding posts that accept shrouded 4mm plugs
« on: July 01, 2013, 10:27:00 am »
One of the binding posts on my home made power supply broke yesterday and I was wondering if binding posts available that accept shrouded 4mm banana plugs?  If no posts are available (I didn't find any) are there 4mm sockets available that accept shrouded 4mm plugs?

Yes, there is. TTi is using them on their power supplies, but I do not know where to buy them.

Yes I saw that about TTI - I suppose one could maybe order spares from TTI (but I bet that would be expensive).

Thanks grbolet, nice find.  Sadly they are out of stock.

I guess looking at the picture the shrouded banana posts have to stick out a little more from the panel to accommodate the shroud.  Maybe I'll just settle for sockets that accept shrouded plugs:  http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/4-mm-test-plugs-sockets/0404137/    Interestingly, all the shrouded sockets I found were in the UK !

Thanks guys, the eBay ones look tempting and I'll probably get a sample set, but they look a little shallow to fit the whole of the shrouded banana plug.

With those cheap ebay ones, if you are soldering anything to the tag, make sure you have a banana plug cable plugged in to act as a heat sink whilst soldering, or you are not going to be happy with the results

Thanks notsob, good tip.  I've had those plastic sockets melt on me before.  Not sure the expensive ones fair much better, or do they?

Not that you're meant to solder to a blade terminal.

Even the eBay cheapies aren't consistently bad. I got a bag of twenty or so real cheap a while ago and heated the ever living crap out of them (wasn't really paying much attention) and they're perfectly fine. I expect many of the expensive ones do well too.

A quick follow-up.  The 4mm sockets I got from eBay that accept shrouded plugs are pretty nice.   The fixing nut is tricky to get on right, but it works in the end.  Sockets themselves are nice.

Farnell also carries a multitude of different shrouded 4mm banana plugs, 47 or so.

Search for 'shrouded' in Connectors -> Test -> Banana Plugs & Jacks.

Another manufacturer is Stäubli, but they don't appear to be as widely available as the SKS Hirschmann ones.

So while reading the blog on E-Z-Hook's website, I came across this post from 2011:
Quote
Single panel mounts P/N 9280 and P/N 9282 now accept both standard and shrouded banana plugs. They are available immediately in red and black. Both offer a turret terminal connection.

Their product descriptions now read "Shrouded Banana Socket Binding Post, Turret Terminal"

Additionally, the dual version of 9280 (which is just the singles with a mounting plate) also supports shrouded plugs: P/N 9406. Its drawing expressly references the update to the 9280 that makes it compatible with shrouded plugs.

Digi-Key carries all of these, although only 9406 is an in-stock item, the rest are special-order only (but with a minimum quantity of 1 and lead time of 2 weeks, so still reasonable to order).

Maybe these ?

Reichelt now sell the Hirschmann SAB series (even though they are absent from the PDF catalogue):

All of those are sockets, not binding posts. They're just surface-mount sockets, rather than the usual flush mount.

Trimming the shrouds off only takes a few seconds.  :P

:::whoosh::: not the point!

I don't generally work with anything where the shrounds are even distantly needed for operator safety, but I prefer using shrouded cables because you can do things like stack plugs (while not plugged into a gadget) and the unconnected male pin can't short things out.
