BM235 LCD issue
« on: September 18, 2017, 01:27:43 pm »
Has anyone seen this issue:  https://youtu.be/jv7QGay5DNs

There is no usable function due to this behavior rendering the meter unusable.

Is there a fix?

It seems it's "rebooting" continually.
I have one, and it does show the test screen when I first switch it on, but then of course it stops and you can use it...

I can't help you any further, tho... I'm sorry, I'm not competent enough.

Edit: actually I have a question: is it brand new?  have you ever seen it working properly?
Also, try to switch it on without test leads, who knows?
But then, if it's new it's better to send it back, it really shouldn't do that.

Have you tried the obvious and inserted brand new fresh batteries?  If yes, then contact Dave for a replacement.  He might make a video out of it trying to repair it?

Has anyone seen this issue:

I can induce the continuous-reboot behavior by inserting a fair amount of series resistance into the power supply (800R - 1K).  The low-battery icon stays on the whole time though, and I notice yours does not.  But it wouldn't hurt to check for a defective cell, or bad contacts including the little springs that interface with the PCB.

It looks like not enough grunt to boot/kick over properly

I second to ask are the battery contacts that go to the circuit board clean and making good contact?
Any hairline cracks etc in the area?
Have you tried other batteries, even old working ones?

Ask Mr. Jones if you can send it in for a teardown and fix,

with a bit of luck he'll either sort it out in a few minutes

or get down and dirty on Youtube with that screwdriver!   :scared:

Brand new Dooracell batteries :)
Sorry, didn't have sound on when I watched the video.

The reason for suggesting the new batteries is I have seen this behaviour in Fluke 80 series I generation.  The battery is too weak during power on self test and goes into the loop.

Thanks for all the replies.  The batteries test fine on their own and they are at full capacity.  I recently moved and after a few months of sorting out my workbench  I finally got around to firing up my meter to tests some resistors.  That's when I noticed the test sequence loop.  It had worked fine for months doing similar, light duty tasks.  It had the factory bats inside so I immediately replaced them with a fresh set (each new bat tested a happy 1.5v).  But, no joy was to be had, the thing just loops and loops no matter the mode.

Well, you may be right.  No word from EEVBLOG or Dave on this.  Should have read the fine print - was there any?.  He seemed willing to replace at first, but no response anymore.  Buyer beware.

It appears it powers up and runs a self test drawing more power from the batteries. The batteries sag causing it to start a shutdown. With the load less on the batteries the voltage rises and a start is initiated. This process happens very quickly.  And the process goes on and on...
I would try new batteries even if the originals test OK.
If its not the batteries I would look elsewhere in the power supply.

I doubt there would be much risk dealing with Dave.  Maybe he is doing a video on your meter and doesn't want to spoil the outcome.
