Burster Digistant 4405 Calibartion Source Teardown
« on: October 30, 2016, 06:34:56 pm »
I want to share some pictures of the Burster Digistant 4405 Calibration Source that i got on Ebay. Build Date of this Device is 16 March 1990 according to the type plate.
Voltage range 10 µV to 11.000 V
Current range 2 µA to 22.00 mA
Some technical data from the Datasheet:

It was not that well packed, so I decided to take it apart. :D
I noticed that the 2716 ROM didn't sit correctly in its socket. This was one reason more to take it apart.
They have used a CDP1802 as the CPU https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RCA_1802.

Part two, the board where the magic happens.
The Main Components are:
ICL7134 14Bit DAC
REF01 as the Main Reference

The 10V Range ist a bit off with 10.011V.

I also think the old NiCd Cells needs to be replaced.

Does anybody have a full manual for it?

Thanks for the teardown. Amazing how much smaller those portable calibrators can get now .
If you own any North Hills Electronics gear, message me. L&N Fan

Thanks for the pictures.  I guess the battery pack has 5 cells, so about 6 V.  Do you happen to know what the original power supply voltage was, or what range the charge circuit tolerates?

I can't find my notes for the original power supply at the moment, but I think it was something like 12,8VDC with round about 800mA.
12V connected to the DC jack works also.

The cells(Sanyo KR-2000C) on my 4405 are mostly dead and need to be replaced for use without the power supply.
NiCd cells are still available for about 4-5€

Maybe I will reverse engineering the power supply/charger pcb on a rainy day during my vacation

By the way, I recently acquired one of these as well.  I like the user interface.

Did you figure out which potentiometer adjusts which range?  I'm guessing there is a gain and offset for each of the four ranges.

If you don't know, I may send a mail to Burster--who knows, maybe they will answer.  :)

Great to have a manual with calibration instructions :)

I used an online contact form in the past, but never got an answer.
