DG4062 FW update - non-responsive issue
« on: May 21, 2016, 07:02:38 am »
When trying to update my DG4026 FW, nothing happens - as per follows:

a. I use an old 16M USB stick (FAT formatted)
[ and when sticking it inside while instrument is normally running, the message "“USB
Device Recognized
” does appear ]

b. The appropriate "DG4000Update.GEL" file is in its root.

c. I strictly follow the Rigol DG40xx FW update instructions, as follows:
- Press the power on button on the front panel of the instrument - Checked !
- All of the buttons on the front panel will flash once.   Immediately following the first flash of all of the buttons, press the Help button once - Checked !
- The Mod and Utility buttons will light.= Checked !
- Insert the USB drive with the new firmware upgrade into the USB port
on the front panel of the instrument. ( this must older 4GB or smaller) - Checked !
- The Utility button will flash and turn solid - Checked !
- The Store button will then flash and turn solid - Checked !

- The individual buttons in the Waveform Menu of the front panel will
flash and then go solid one-at-a-time. (except one) - Nothing happens
- After all of the buttons in the Waveform Menu turn solid,
all of the front panel buttons will flash and the instrument will reboot.
This should take approximately 5 minutes to complete - Nothing, even after 30 minutes wait...

Note - No damage either, FW version remains unchanged.
Does anybody have a clue of what's happening, or on how to overcome this ?
TIA

Are you positive the version of the firmware is newer than the one already installed on the generator? I remember downloading a DS2000A firmware update a while back that actually contained the previous versions firmware instead of the new version it was supposed to. If you have a copy of the firmware thats currently installed on the scope, compare it to the version you are trying to install to make sure.

Try an other USB stick, 1 or 2 gigs type, formatted as FAT-32

OK. I'll try that and let know.
Meanwhile I have to special order a 2G-4G stick, because any below 4G sticks are quite rare to find nowdays....

Is there an alternative way to make the instrument read USB *.GEL files (like maybe - Store->Read... etc) ?

Power cycle it and then recheck the FW version.

We had some Siglents that did similar and you couldn't tell if the update was successful until they were rebooted.

I did "Power Cycle" it after an approximated 30 minutes wait.
Nothing has changed. Same FW version (00.01.07) remained unchanged.
At least it didn't brick  :)

Then all I can suggest is to re-download the update and try again but first do a full format on the stick.

Thanks... I did these 2 things too. Still, nothing happens.
It is as if the instrument doesn't even read the file from the stick (despite the fact that the stick is indeed recognized).

All that's left is to try another stick....

Yes, I will (a new 4G stick is on order), and let know.

I had the same problem with my DG4000. I used the same USB stick that I've been using to update my DS4000 and that the DG recognised just fine but it didn't work with the firmware update. I received a list of know to work USB-sticks from Rigol, I can dig it up if you want. But definitely try another USB stick.

If it's not already, you might want to try making your existing USB stick into a boot device, then give it another go.

I'll appreciate getting that Rigol list.

One could try making that either a Linux or Windows Boot stick.
But I'm not sure that will work or will be recognized as such by the Rigol OS (or whatever that might be).

FWIW, it worked for me on my DS1054Z (don't have one of their FGs). Windows BTW (that's what I had open at the time), though I also run Linux as well.

Thanks for the tip. But I fear it's too risky to try it on the DG4062.

I'll appreciate getting that Rigol list.
Thanks !

Here's the list, it's been 6 months so if you ask them they may have a more recent one.

When I had the issue I wrote a detailed problem description, letting Rigol know that the USB drive I did use worked fine for updating the DS4000 and was recognised by the DG4000 which made be think it was fine but they replied that It really IS related to the USB drive - and it was. Their general recommendation was to use as small drive as you can find. I think I ended up using an old 256MB one (not on their list).
