DIY Oscilloscope kits - any recommendations?
« on: September 19, 2017, 03:07:50 pm »
As I'm currently thinking of buying some form of digital 'scope, and bearing in mind that I really enjoy making up electronic kits, I'm thinking that buying a 'scope kit would be a good idea. But are there any good quality ones out there? Must also include a case/enclosure.

Must also be at least 20 MHz, preferably higher. Single or dual trace, I'm not worried.

Not sure is any of these kits are any use if you need an oscilloscope however you may get some fun out of building the kit. Have a look at Jullian Ilett's video

https://youtu.be/-nPiMGb3Qb8

I think there are a few other examples of this kit being built, unfortunately I cant remember who did them.

The only kit I know is this one: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=DSO138

Nobody would say it's a good oscilloscope though.

Nope.

Most diy kit scopes from jyetech don't have a bandwidth above 200 kHz.

I've seen a couple of projects which can be close to your 20 MHz requirements but they are being arranged in somewhat like group-buy way and after a few runs they are closed.
Short pieces, high value, small period, huge amount, long delay.

I built a DSO138 kit (the one shown in the two videos above), and while it's fun enough to assemble, it's kind of a pain in the ass to use.

The new model, the DSO Shell (DSO150) not only has a proper enclosure, but has apparently much improved controls, which are one of the big shortcomings of the DSO138.

See http://www.jyetech.com/Products/LcdScope/e150.php

Thanks for all of the suggestions so far. :)

I do wish that those who produce such kits wouldn't pre-mount the surface mounted parts - while I can appreciate that some people don't like soldering them on, some of us are fine with it.

Feel free to take them off and put them back again.

Look carefully: JYE Tech offers its kits both with and without the SMD components soldered, so if you buy a genuine kit, you have the choice.

The counterfeit ones on eBay, Aliexpress, and Banggood, however, are invariably the version with the SMD pre-soldered.
