Title: Does the Rigol 831 have a hack?
Post by: coinmaster on July 30, 2017, 03:04:40 am
I need the Rigol 831 and I'm at the edge of my budget as it is so I cannot afford the upgrades even if I wanted to.
I know the 832 is hackable but I don't see anything for the 831. Does it exist?

You have to buy the DP831? What are the features you need?

Most of my designs require a +/- 15v supply with a wide range of currents but I also need a 6.3v supply capable of 10A+ which unfortunately doesn't seem to be a thing.
So it looks to be that the best plan is to buy a couple Rigol 831s and parallel the 8v sections to make a 6.3v 10A supply.
I need tight regulation in general.

If you want to go for Rigol power supplies, I'ld recommend to get the DP832 for the +-15V, albeit at 3A max (in comparison to the 2A of the DP831 -- hope this will suffice) and have a separate DP811 for the 6.3V@10A (will supply up to 11A). I've got these two PSUs (besides some "el cheapos" and a few HP boat anchors) and have "improved" both. I guess this would be possible or the DP831 as well. I'm quite happy with the Rigol PSUs, I never expected that numeric input of the voltage/current would be so convenient, having had to turn knobs beforehand...

Btw, I never really got used to PSUs with coarse/fine adjustments, anytime prefer a single ten-turn pot (or digital keypad, even if its arranged ridiculously as on the DP8xx series  ;) )!

Cheers,
Thomas

Hmm you may be right, but ouch what an expense, the DP811 is $600.
Are you sure it supplies up to 11A? It says 10A in the specs.
