Title: DS2000 Firmware Status
Post by: rodelco54 on July 12, 2016, 03:05:45 am
I apologize if I am not following normal protocol, but I am not very experienced in "blogging".  I have recently purchased a used DS2072A oscilloscope and have been gaining a lot of insight and knowledge about it from these forum pages, but frankly there is so much here it is a bit overwhelming.  I started to ask this question in the latest DS2000 Firmware topic I could find, but received a warning that there had been no activity on that forum for over 120 days so maybe it would be better if I started a new topic.

I have updated my firmware to unlock all of the bandwidth and options by following instructions found on this Blog (which was fantastic!).  I put back the software version that was on my scope when I got it (“00.03.00.01.03” = “00.03.00.SP1”) after I did the upgrade "hack".  I was wondering if I should upgrade to a more recent version of the software (I think I saw a "00.03.02.01.07" version).

Does anyone have any opinions on what currently available version would be the most stable, or have the best features/fewest bugs?

Thanks for your help.

Hi!

Given my experience with this type of machine, I'd always use the latest firmware I can get.
Once you liberated the scope and it works reliably *cough* for it's class ;) you should always
look for infos on the latest firmware.

Of course there might be versions that are less stable that the previous one, but this is discovered
within minutes/hours. So have a keen eye on the internets ;)

There are some threads here where this kind of information pops up very soon after a new
firmware/software is available or even has been sent to a specific person.

How I did it:
When a new firmware came along, I grabbed and saved it.
Then waited a few days to see if something went wrong, checking the forums with a keen eye on that topic. If nothing exploded, I installed it.
No problems this way - for me. YMMV etc. :)

And some clarifications wrt to blogging and forum:

The latest version of the DS2000 firmware is 00.03.04 SP2 (full version number 00.03.04.02.01), I would go ahead and install that one. I have been running that one since a couple of days after it came out (around December 2015) and have not had any issues with it. You do not need to uninstall the hack before hand, just go ahead and upgrade and all your unlocks will remain in place. Or if you are paranoid you can uninstall them first and then reinstall them after upgrading the new firmware, but its really not necessary. Judging by the firmware version you list on your scope I would guess it came out in late 2014 or early 2015. The newer version have fixed quite a few of the bugs that were present back then as well as introduced a few new features.

Thank you so much, that is exactly what I was looking for.  I have downloaded that firmware file, so I will give that a try!
