Extech EX430 missing part
« on: April 19, 2018, 04:36:58 pm »
Bought "dead" off eBay. Missing a switch contact. Anyone? Willing to pay.

Circled in red, I need a larger one like the one circled, it's missing on the right side.  Thanks!

Is it missing? It may be normal for few models

There are some marks in the "socket" that looks like there was one.

You sure there is supposed to be one on the right-hand side?
Here's a teardown done by someone on the forum and there is only one such large contact (same as what you have).

UPDATE: Looking at the picture from the above teardown, I think the larger contact should go on the other side of the selector in your meter (i.e. move the larger contact from the left side to the right).

Many of the meters seem to use the same contacts.  You may consider just cutting one contact off a double and soldering it to a standard one as a work around.

Hmmm. It's completely dead, yet if I short both of the positions on the main board where the larger contacts appear should be when in one of the first switch positions, using a bit of aluminum foil, the meter chirps, comes alive and the display appears. I have tried the one larger contact in both possible locations, no change.

I'll check it some more and post back.

Yeah,   I moved the one large contact from one side to the other to check - haven't moved it back. No power either way, yet if I short manually using tin foil it comes on.

The responses so far have been quite encouraging, and glad to know I don't need the "missing" contact.

Probably should be able to get it going. I'll keep you guys updated.

I moved the large contact back to the top position and it now functions ONLY on DC volts and Ohms.

Shows DC milli-volts on the display  in all other positions. The contact is split (broken on one edge, so there may still not be adequate tension on all three contact points.

At this point I think I still need a new contact to try.

I'll keep my eyes open for one somewhere.
