FY3200S vs MHS-5200A (funtion generators)??
« on: June 25, 2017, 06:15:37 am »
Hi guys
I need your advice to buy a cheap function generator.i've read in the forum some posts on FY3200S and  MHS-5200A (updated version 12bit) and to be honest, i'm really lost and i need your help to choose one between them.
i've heard also that the FY3200S can be unlocked to 25 MHZ for the sine wave ( my main use is the sinwave ), is it still the case with the latest firmware?
thanks in advance

I would be glad to offer an opinion on which generator to get but without some kind of information about how you will use the generator it is hard to decide between the two.  Each has its plus and minuses and neither is perfect and fully meets expectations.  I did a data sheet specification comparison between the two (see https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/feeltech-fy3224s-24mhz-2-channel-dds-aw-function-signal-generator/msg697718/#msg697718.

For myself I bought an FY3206S and did the upgrade once it was published.  However, I found the FY3200 performance to be a bit lacking for my needs and had to go the next grade up to an SDG2042X (which is great and a huge step up by the way).  I have read that with the latest FW the frequency upgrade hack on the FY3200's no longer worked for some people.  However, if you create an arbitrary sine wave with 4 cycles over the 2048 points you can get sine waves to full frequency easily.

To add further confusion, for only slightly more cost than the FY3200 and MHS-5200 there is the recently released JDS6600 which has some interesting upgrades compared to the FY3200 and the MHS-5200A.  This product has its own recently created and active thread.  All three are basically twins in that they use the exact same plastic enclosure and target the same functionality.  The JDS6600 can do a full/standard 10Vpp into 50 Ohm termination while the FY3200 and the MHS-5200 can not.

Thank gby for your help.
My main use with a function generator modulation and demodulation testing ( balanced modulator, some I and Q modulation techniques...).I would like to buy a rigol or a siglent like you have, but i'm a little bit limited in my budget, because i just spent 550 CAD for a rigol 1054Z  oscilloscope just ordered the MHS-5200A (200 MS, 12BIT) .I Payed 74 CAD shipping included . I know that are a lot of limitations for this kind of generator, but i'll start with a basic one and save a little bit of money and buy a siglent or a rigol one in the future.
thanks again for the heads up gby.

gavionics,

Best of luck with your MHS-5200A and the Rigol 1054Z.  With these two there are a number things you can do.

None of the FY3200, MHS-5200A, JDS6600 have built in modulation modes.  Something like Siglent SDG2042x has built in AM, FM, phase modulation, FSK, and much more.  More importantly it has an analog input so that you can use a second generator/any analog source for your modulation input and then output modulated I and Q components directly from the SDG2042x.  So, even if you further upgrade like I did for an SDG2042x your MHS-5200A will be handy to use with with the SDG2042x for a modulation source.

On the MHS-5200A you could create pre-modulated arbitrary waveforms for the generator to output, but with only 1024 points in the arbitrary table you will be limited.  You will also be very limited in getting I and Q channels to be output simultaneously and properly phase synchronized.

when i said modulation i meant built up a circuit from the scratch like Balanced modulators and apply a 2 sin waves and study the behavior of the circuit.i mean do modulation basic stuff.
thanks and have a good day

Which do you recommend JDS6600 or FY6600 ?
Thank you!

absolutely the FeelTech FY6600 :
real 2x DAC instead of resistor-ladder, the others use
250MSps 14bit 8Kpts x 8Kpts, the other 12bit? and 2Kpts? find out yourself,
33 preset waves plus 64 user defined waves, total 97
and now: Modulation AM, FM, and a lot Digital: ASK FSK PSK PM !!
because of the VCO Input on the back.
VCO can be used for freq, amplitude, offset, duty cycle
and then it has output as CMOS and TTL (0/180)

just ordered the FY6600-30 for 86€ from Aliexpress
the 30MHz (there are versions up to 60) but this is Sinus only!
Square is always 25M and the rest 10M (ramp, triangle, puls, random)
other brands must be studied, they differ there, e.g. ramp only 2 or 5M

then there is the Feeltech FY2300H <<!!  more expensive, but
a nice little alu-box, again varies in MHz Sinus, sqare 25, the rest 20MHz
but no modulation
and I am not shure how a 20MHz Ramp looks like, out of 250MSa ??

so I ordered the FY6600 most of it's modulating capabilities...

HI Kahe40
I received a FY6600 some weeks ago, unfortunately the CD that was packed with the generator is not readable.
May I ask you when you'll receive yours to test it and if it is possible making a copy of the files for me?
Your support will be much appreciated.
Thanks

A couple of people have been unable to read the CD that came with their generator.  Unfortunately the Feeltech website (http://en.feeltech.net/) does not have FY6600 files for download yet.  Since I was able to read my CD I made a zip file of just the files relevant to the FY6600 and put it up on https://wetransfer.com/ on a free hosting.  Since this is a free hosting it will only be available for 7 days so get it right away.

I haven't loaded it myself yet but would be interested in folk's experience with it.

Enjoy

Enjoy
