Handheld Oscilloscope for Automotive Testing.
« on: March 26, 2017, 10:03:35 am »
I am looking for a some handheld scope's to be used exclusively for testing in the automotive field.

I need one type to be either cheap or rugged, one that can read speed sensors and PWM signals.

The other I would like to have 2 channels so I can see the phase between 2 pulse trains.

I have seen a few, I was wondering if anyone had experience with the cheap chinese ones like ebay item: 162279970011

Any suggestions very welcomed.

I would suggest a Fluke 199 scope for your application.
Very versatile well regarded indestructible.

I have a Verus Wireless. Which is awkward and quite limited compared to a real 100mhz or 200mhz scope.

The money spent on used model will be well worth it.

Do you want/need isolated channels?

I was looking for one as well and did not like the cheap ones I looked at.   I found a guy with a couple of used Fluke 97s for sale.  So far, I've been very happy with them.  Fluke allowed me to post their automotive training video for it on-line.

It's not a great oscilloscope for other uses, but if you want one that would come with alot of what you need I would recommend the fluke 98 automotive scopemeter series II. Very reliable, very tough scope. I used one for years at BMW and despite its age it never failed to do what I needed, from the 80's - 10's it will get the job done. If you can't find one that comes with everything you could go for a newer one. They are usually somewhat tough to find with anything more than a couple of probes but they are still very good scope for automotive work.

Take a look at the older Tektronix THS720P scopes series.
They also work very well for what you have in mind to do.
And they are cheap now on ebay and they are very professional scopes.
There are 3 kinds of people in this world, those who can count and those who can not.
