HP 35670A options EEPROM
« on: April 11, 2018, 02:58:40 pm »
Hi,
I have recently bought a second hand HP 35670A. The instrument works perfectly but some (software) options are not active. For a similar instrument (HP 35665A) I have found the files that enable ALL THE SOFTWARE options (please see the attached files).
I'm looking for someone that has done the very same hack for the HP 35670A that use a similar 8 pins EEPROM to enable/disable software options. In particular I'm interested in activating options 1D0 and 1D2. Thank in advance for your help and congratulations to Dave for its video blogs :-).

For the HP 35665A the original EEPROM files can be found here

As alternative, you may buy a complete "ready to use" kit here:

In  case anyone else is searching for 35670A options configuration, attached is a dump from the 85C72 configuration EEPROM of a unit with the following options:
  • 1C2 Add instrument BASIC
  • 1D0 Computed order tracking
  • 1D1 Real time octave measurements
  • 1D2 Swept sine measurement
  • 1D3 Curve fit/synthesis
  • 1D4 Arbitrary source
  • AY6 Four Input Channel Configuration
  • UFC 8MB RAM
  • UFF 1 MB NVRAM

Here's a hexeditor view of the file:

Cheers,

Tim

After software upgrade it's time for a hardware upgrade. My DSA had AN2 option. To enable the UFC option, I used a 72-pin SIMM with 4 MB DRAM of this type.

First I checked what type of memory is installed on the memory board. There were installed FPM-DRAM chips with 80 ns access time. I checked what type of socket is installed (standard 72-pin SIMM) and found a similar memory on a local auction site. It cost something around 1.5 EUR.  It works.

The EEPROM modification of the 35670A to enable the options doesn't seem to require a checksum adjustment, contrary to the EEPROM modification of 89410 where a checksum adjustment is required. Just put the row of v's in your own image and the options become active. Nice to have them all enabled and play around with them  :)
