In circuit ESR meter
« on: January 20, 2018, 11:16:31 pm »
What are good options for an ESR meter that can check caps in circuit?  Is it worth getting a specific ESR meter or is a DMM with ESR cheaper/as good?

I've seen some VERY cheap ESR meters advertised but I'm a little sceptical about a £6 meter including delivery!

I suggest to get a proper meter that specialises in ESR only.

It's an expensive 'one trick pony' cash outlay, but will pay for itself in no time

Just don't let the batteries leak in it, or connect it to charged capacitors     :scared:

Those all in one LCR meters with bonus ESR feature seem like a good deal, but may be too fiddly to set up and or not quite up to the task of serious ESR troubleshooting,
and a decent LCR rig isn't going to be cheap anyway.

I got the Peak Atlas ESR70 because of good reviews, small size, automatic sense and discharge, pre-checking new and NOS capacitors,
and it serves as a handy low ohm meter too

FWIW a decent LCR meter is on my wish list too, but not for any ESR functions

I bought a Peak which seems quite satisfactory.  But don't expect to read ESR in-circuit.  You'll need to desolder on leg for reliable results in most cases.
