Intel D865GLC in WR6030A dead
« on: October 06, 2018, 02:52:32 pm »
I'm having a malfunctioning Intel D865GLC motherboard here in my Waverunner 6030A...
BIOS upgrade went wrong and now I try to run recovery, but it gives 5 beeps right at power-up.
According to the MB manual this means processor failure...
So I replaced the CPU (478 socket) with a compatible one, from a working system, but still the message remains.
Now I guess a processor from the MB itself is causing the error and only option is to replace the MB.

Anyone advice for a replacement? A pre-owned Intel D865GLC is not really available I noticed.
It should have the same dimensions and layout in order to fit in the system.

Thanks!

Have you tried following every step on this, also have you tried doing a recovery with a Newer BIOS or even your Original BIOS level, there are some peculiarities with some Intel boards
when updating the BIOS and certain steps need to be done first, be it incremental updates or flashing a certain way to update the ME.

Yes, I did that. Tried both CD-ROM and USB method, but no success.

I wonder if its complaining because the recovery part is missing the microcode for your CPU or doesn't recognise that CPU ID. I've had to upgrade the firmware on motherboards first before they would accept certain CPUs. Can you borrow something compatible but old? Just enough to get the BIOS recovery process running.

The recovery file that I am using is from a later date than the CPU.
I'm just realizing that its also from a newer date as the BIOS firmware that was operating OK (from before the upgrade attempt).
Let me give it a try with the recovery file from the BIOS version that was originally in the board!

That worked!!  ;D

With the older BIOS recovery file it initially seemed nothing happens (also no beeps).
I had it running for at least 30m. Then I shut down and replaced the jumper, and surprisingly it works!

I was already searching for a replacement MB and found this one: https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/P4i65G/#Manual.

Maybe I still replace the old MB, also to be able to upgrade to SSD. The present MB does not recognize the SATA SSD.
Or can I expect incompatibility with the LeCroy PCI and AGP cards when I go for the ASrock board?

Damn, I was too early.

It indeed works, but only when a VGA monitor is connected.
Without this connection it doesn’t even boot!
Once XP is up and running (with external monitor connected) the internal monitor comes up and works fine (also the touchscreen).

I guess the BIOS has issues with loading the AGP drivers for the LeCroy AGP card??

So, a bit more research needed! i’ll keep you informed. Advice is welcome.

I said to try the older file...
Have you changed the settings for which display card is default, change it from onboard to AGP. Enable any graphics option roms if there is a setting for that.
Also there might be a halt on error, disable that.

I’ve already played around with all the possible graphics settings in the BIOS.
I think I will try out another motherboard. Thanks for the help so far!

Kludge but you may be able to work around it by making a dummy VGA plug with three 75 ohm resistors. If everything else works then and it is fooled by this then it'll be enough to get your running again without trying to find a motherboard.

It's also possible it needs to see the EDID EEPROM...

It should still fallback to VGA even without an EDID EEPROM present. Can't hurt to try it anyway.

Mhmm, the 75R trick should work, it's certainly the first thing to try.

It may work with just the one resistor on the green video output but some boards were smart enough to need all three and others needed the EDID instead or as well or it'd default to some non existent onboard graphics.

Ah, that’s an interesting idea!
Will give the 75R option a try in one of the coming days.

You shouldn't need to use any resistors, either it's a BIOS Setting or LeCroy had a custom BIOS (Can you get hold of that BIOS from LeCroy?)

Do you have a spare AGP graphics card to test, the motherboard should output to that by default if it's plugged in or via this BIOS setting and it will override the onboard:

Like said, I tried all the graphics settings in the BIOS. No luck.

Meanwhile I’ve replaced the Intel D865GLC with a pre-owned ASrock P4i65G and everything is working fine again. I‘ve also used this oppurtunity to upgrade the CPU, RAM and HDD, so its running very smooth now!
Let me keep the Intel board for spares.
